I've heard a lot of rave reviews about
Spring Breakers and how it taps into the
Quentin Tarantino zone, so naturally this would be on my list of movies to see. There are parts that are reminiscent of
QT on the surface and that's only the gangster lifestyle it embodies. Beyond that, I see very little to tie
Spring Breakers in with movies like
Pulp Fiction, True Romance or
Reservoir Dogs. You will never confuse
Harmony Korine with that of
Tarantino as they visually have nothing in common and don't even write the same way.
Korine shoots and edits
Breakers more like an extended art house music video, something
Tarantino has never been associated with. Visually I do dig the look of
Breakers with its heavy emphasis on Day-Glow colors and moody atmosphere. That's where the "praise" ends with the film for me.
To say that
Spring Breakers is OVERRATED is an understatement. There is barely a plot to hold the movie together. You have Four Chicks (
Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson and
Rachel Korine) that head to
Spring Breaker to "find themselves" and in doing so, realize that a life of crime is what they want. At least for a while. Along the way they meet up with
Alien (James Franco) and the situation escalates until the eventual blood bath at the end, which by the way was totally unrealistic in that two chicks could just lay waste to a mansion full of gangsta's with such ease. The movie as I said it more visual than story and
Harmony knows that. So what's the best way to at least keep people in their seats? Pack as many naked chicks as you can into a 90 minute movie. I love me some naked girls, but even I was shocked at how many there were in what I'm guessing was an
R-Rated movie. This is beyond
NC-17 material. I had to double check my DVD cover to see if it said 'Unrated'. It doesn't. So, if this is the actual version that screened in theaters, definitely surprise at the rating it got.
As a movie that carries a story with it, I can't recommend it at all. But naked chicks, strip clubs and soft-core sex and all that the spring break lifestyle offers, you may want to check it out. The editing and how the story is structured with characters rhapsodizing as the scene transitions may turn a few people off. They rely on that pretty much the entire movie and at times was testing my patience's with it. If that's not your cup of tea, then this is definitely a
Skip.
