The Shallows

Trailer

I've been looking forward to The Shallows for a long time. It took awhile, but I finally got my hands on a copy of the DVD. So was it worth the wait? F*ck yeah it was. It's very rare that I ever sit down to watch a movie from start to finish non-stop with no breaks of any kind. The movie has to do a lot on their end to get me to the point where my focus is 100% on the movie and nothing else. Even if there is a slight dip anywhere in the film, my mind will start to wander and it becomes easy for me to pause the flick for a bit and do something else. With The Shallows, that didn't happen. Not once. I was very curious how they would be able to sustain the entire flick knowing that it's gonna be Blake Lively and only Blake Lively carrying the flick for the entire duration. Factor in that this is basically a one location shoot, it's a tall order to maintain tension for a full 90 minutes.

This isn't the greatest script mind you. It's par for the course for this genre and I'm not expecting them to reinvent the wheel here. It's what they do with the story that was invigorating. I even thought they finally managed to shoehorn in 'found footage' in the most believable way that wouldn't alienate viewers who can't stand that type of plot device to tell a story. I like that Blake's character was very analytical in her problem solving and didn't have to rely on someone else to come in a save the day, even though the bulk of the movie is in fact shouting for help. The movie was shot very well. The editing and pacing was tight and lean. And this movie has one of the greatest and most satisfying cinematic kills ever. I sh*t you not. I thought it was pretty clever and thrilling in the manner the Shark bites it. If you haven't seen this movie, definitely check it out. Highly recommend it. The kill will leaving your jaw on the floor in it's awesomeness. No pun intended. PS, props to Sully "Steven" Seagull. Awesome bird and an even awesome-er name.  ;D

Loved The Shallows. One of the rare films I remember to tell others... check out this film... it's a great ride.

It lead me to download Rogue from Netflix for a plane ride home.
