Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017)

Trailer

Okay, I watched Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi this past Saturday Night and have been putting off writing any kind of review because I'm conflicted. I honestly don't know what it is about this movie that I just don't want to write anything. I've been letting the movie swirl around in my head the past couple of days just trying to put my finger on what is troubling me about the flick. Does the movie suck like most people have said? Well, it depends on how you look at parts of the movie or character motivations. Would I put this in my Top 3 Star Wars movies? No. Honestly, I think I need to re-watch The Last Jedi again because I'm still not sure what I liked and disliked about this. Something is off for sure. So, yeah, I'll give Jedi another go again and then come back with a review. I'm not even going to give this any Stars right now until after the second viewing.

Was that the first time you saw this?  Dang.

Yeah, definitely a lot to unpack with this movie.  Gorgeous movie, absolutely.  Different than before, certainly.  Polarizing for sure.  Lots of unexpected twists, some that are right for the characters but there are some changes that give you vertigo.

Honestly, I don't think we'll really be able to get a handle on this movie until Episode IX comes out and we can view it in context.  It's a h*ll of a downer of a movie, I mean, things get worse and worse for our characters, so many people die, the stakes get worse and worse and there's barely a victory to be seen.  The "fun" stuff is in a plotline that people don't seem to care for and feels a bit out of place, the whole Finn and Rose thing.  The kind of adventure they go on seems so strange considering the stakes of the chase they're leaving, there's time to go out and go around for a bit and then come back while this one dire countdown is going on?  There's something about that which doesn't instinctively gel.

There are a couple little "I wish" things I have in regards to the movie, mostly little stuff like I wish Phasma was the one chasing Finn and Rose the whole time, I wish the First Order guys were younger like last time (since they're supposed to be "new fascists," but it's been so long since I saw the movie, I don't remember the rest.

You know what I think an issue with the flick is that's throwing people off?  There's no... empty space.  Which is REALLY weird for a shared universe movie.

Let me tell you what I mean:  This movie takes place right after the last movie ended.  Right after.  Kind of.  Mostly.  There's no adventures between then and now, no extra backstory, nothing for us to research.  There are no other adventures going on, no side stories we could explore in another flick.  No Resistance guys they need to meet.  At the end, there's nowhere else to go.  The auxiliary characters who might show up in another movie (Phasma, DJ, what have you?) ... all die.  All the original trilogy troika are gone now, the characters who could replace them die... and the "sequel hook" won't happen for a long time.  The kids?  Telling us we gotta wait 10+ years or so... which it feels like we just did.

Combine that with the feeling that TFA almost felt like a prequel, introing the characters, like a pilot episode.  I think we were expecting a big raucous Star Wars movie this time around, "okay, you know the world, let's have some fun" and it felt like we jumped from that to the deadly serious part.

I'm going to try and watch the bonus features this weekend.  I do want to see those, but it might be a while before I watch TLJ.

I'm also... I'm toying with the idea of how I should organize these films, I'm thinking chronologically.  I don't think I ever watched the whole series in order, but if I ever want to, it'd be cool to have a playlist at the ready (and I'm thinking of putting Battlefront II in there as well).
