The Green Mile (1999)
« on: September 03, 2012, 10:53:18 pm »

With the passing of Michael Clarke Duncan today, I decided to watch The Green Mile as my way of paying respect to an actor that I admired. There's not many actors that can upstage Tom Hanks in his own movie, but that's exactly what Duncan did in this film as John Coffey, a man with extraordinary powers. He just owned every single second of screen time as his own. He is / was amazing as John Coffey and created a lasting legacy with this role.

If you are a fan of The Shawshank Redemption, you will like this one as well. Written and Directed by Frank Darabont, this film has the same aesthetics both visually and in tone. I love The Green Mile and I think it's a fantastic movie. But if there is one criticism I have with it, it's way too long. I get that the time spent watching the movie in a way is to reflect the time that everyone on the Cell Block gets to spend with John, time to bond with him, which makes the ending truly heartbreaking. They weren't executing a guilty man, the were ending the life of a friend. Having said that, the run time of the movie is what ultimately knocks this down a notch in my rating.

I highly recommend this as a Buy. I still have my bare-bones DVD, but I do intend to pick up the 2 Disc Special Edition soon.
