I've been anxiously awaiting to get my hands on a copy of Straight Outta Compton for a long time and it was well worth the wait. I was kind of just expecting to get a story that was more surface and of a shorter time period. But it was just the opposite. It went a bit deeper and covered a whole lot more ground as far as fleshing out a lot of the things surrounding N.W.A. There was so much additional information that even I didn't know about. I wasn't expecting to see anything regarding Suge Knight, Snoop or Tupac. Going into the movie I did think about how they all tied into each other, it's just that I didn't expect the movie to include them. So it was great when they eventually appeared on screen. Props to F. Gary Gray and the writers for doing this flick justice because those guys are part of the legacy of the band in some way by association. Getting Gary to direct was a no-brainer. I've always dug his style and he meshes up perfectly here. He does a great job with the pacing and his shots and was able to interject archival footage into the flick at just the right time to really nail the sights, sounds and look of the 90's.

As for the actors portraying N.W.A., they knocked it out of the park. Whoever cast Jason Mitchell as Eric Wright / Eazy-E should be given a bonus because Mitchell just KILLS it as E. I've never heard of the actor until now, but all the accolades he is getting is just. He is a revelation. Getting O'Shea Jackson Jr. as O'Shea Jackson / Ice Cube was another great casting choice as well. When I first heard he was making his feature film debut, I thought this was more of a stunt casting move and would prove to be a disaster. Nope. He nailed it and does a great job. Also of note was Corey Hawkins as Andre Young / Dr. Dre and Paul Giamatti as Jerry Heller. Both were great as well. The reason why I didn't give this a full 5 Stars had to do with a couple of spots that were written too much like an Afternoon-Special and it shows. A bit awkward in these scenes compared to everything else that happens.  But beyond that, this is a great Rock Bio Flick and something I would definitely watch again. Great soundtrack. Watching the flick put me right back into the late 80's to mid 90's in a way that no other movie has done for me in a while. Hearing the music brought back a lot of memories. I highly recommend this as a Buy. Loved the end credits.
