Sucker Punch (2011)

Trailer

Sucker Punch is an EPIC fail. I can't tell you how disappointed I am in this..."movie". Let's be honest, this is nothing more than a 90 minute music video with the occasional plot point to give us some semblance of a story. Personally, I think Zack Snyder (Watcmen) made a Trailer and then decided to flesh it out into a feature. How else can you explain this? Don't get me wrong, it looks and sounds amazing, but that's where it ends. The story is weak and every character is underdeveloped to the point that no one can connect to or care what happens to any of them. When it got to the end to reveal the twist, I could have cared less. The only thing besides the visuals that I really liked was the music. I would definitely Buy the Soundtrack.

Now I am really nervous about Zack helming Man Of Steel. I'd feel a whole lot better if Christopher Nolan were to take over the director's chair on that one. This is definitely a Skip, something I can't do because I've already wasted time on this movie. Bah!

Love the soundtrack. Picked it up from the library and recorded about half the songs.

I liked the movie in goofy kinda way. Won't buy it, but I do need to watch it again a couple of times. I think there's more than what first appears. A some moments, there is just way to much going on.

Having posted this today and Sucker Punch making the list, has anyone gone back and re-watched the movie? Would like to hear if the movie has gotten better with multiple viewings or if it's still as bad as I remember it. Watching the trailer again, it reminded me how cool it could have been. Re-reading my review is keeping me away.

EDIT:

Just realized that this thread is 3 years old. Doesn't seem that long ago for me.

Not that eager to revisit the thing, though I had totally forgotten that the trailer made this flick look like The Matrix (especially with that music playing).  The only thing I remember liking about the movie was that "through the mirror" tracking shot.

I have watched it several times over the years. So much I decided a $5 blu-Ray would be nice.

I never thought it was bad. I enjoy each time a little bit more. I do find it dancing on the edge of goofiness and just simple visual amazement. I think the story has substance.

I'll continue to have it as a guilty pleasure.

Since a good chunk of time has passed since I saw this, I'd be willing to revisit it again and see if plays better the second time around.

I don't know why I misread that as " a good drunk of time."

Because I must be drunk if I'm gonna watch this again.  ;D Hey it beats drunk dialing my ex girlfriend anyway. I'll see if my Library has a copy on hand tomorrow.

Okay, I haven't read this thread since the last time I posted in it and I didn't realize that the one and only time I've seen Sucker Punch goes all the way back to 2011. I also didn't realize how many times I had been saying I'd be willing to revisit the movie, to give it another shot in the hopes that it would improve with "age". Well, that time of revisiting Sucker Punch finally arrived and sad to say, it didn't change my perception of the movie one bit. I still give it 2 Stars out of 5. There's just nothing here beyond visuals and the music. It's just not a good movie from a story-telling aspect, which for me is vital. This is definitely the last time I will ever watch Sucker Punch as a whole again. I stand by my original review. I may check out some of the fantasy sequences in the future, which by the way still kick ass. But as a film it's paper thin. One thing I can take away from watching this again is that I kept thinking I should re-write this for myself. By that I mean I want to take the same characters and do something with it and actually give it some depth and see what comes out of it and if I like it enough, possible do something in comic book form.

Do it, man!  I'm happy to bounce ideas with, if you want.  You know, this is why I take notes as I watch the flick, track what I'm reacting to, add notes about interesting characters and so on... it's my way of writing for the trashcan, getting creative exercise.  Something I really try to do if I can is fill the holes in one bad movie with elements from another bad movie (this is why I separate my notes into pieces, so I can find them easily and shuffle them around).

W/ Sucker Punch, what are you planning?  Just a better version of the flick?  Or maybe cutting it up and exploring the pieces?  Like try to figure out what the "full movie" would be if it was just the asylum, or the brothel, or World War One Thousand, or Machine Guns And Dragons, or Crazy Train... explore and expand those worlds, and maybe come up with concepts or perspectives that could inspire another project down the road.

I'm not trying to do a better version of the movie.  I want to do something completely different as if the original never existed, but use the same girl characters as well as my take on the fantasy elements. What that is, I don't know. I'm still working through a few different ideas. I'm still waiting on the Art of Sucker Punch, or whatever it's called. I want to cull from some design elements that may or may not have made it to final print. If I get stuck, I may in fact bring you in on this and see where it goes from there.

Man, I used to love those "Art Of" books, but nowadays it feels like it's only art of stuff that actually made it into the movie.  I loved seeing the alternate designs, unused stuff, material cut for time, that sort of thing, but it feels like they never include them now (or only put a few small examples in there).  Everything has ot be perfect perfect perfect now, no one must know that things were imperfect at any point.

I'm real curious to see how you use the girl characters since they're barely characters in the flick.

I'm happy to bounce man, especially on something like this that's just writing for the trashcan.  No stakes, no rules, just pure creativity that may lead to an idea or insight down the road, or create a part that might be useful in something else.
