Supercop

Trailer

I have a huge library of VHS Bootlegs devoted to Asian films with a good chunk belonging to Jackie Chan. So, I'm kind of at odds with how to review Supercop. Since I have both versions, I will try to stick to the "American" version and not the original Hong Version, which by the way is far more superior. Back in the day when Jackie Chan was the hottest thing going, I knew that it was inevitable that some Hollywood Studio would eventually start releasing his higher profile Hong Kong flicks to an american audience, one of them being Police Story 3 (aka Supercop). My biggest beef with these 'American' versions has to do with the atrocious voiceover dubbing. They are done so poorly that they become cliched and should be laughed at and mock whenever possible.

If the studios want to showcase Jackie's talent, I'd prefer they release the original film with their own voices and just use subtitles. That's another thing that bothers me about these newer versions. They don't even try to get Asians to do the voiceover work. It's just odd hearing American actors in some of the roles. The voices and the characters just don't mesh. As for Supercop itself, it's a good flick, but it's not one of Jackie's better films and this one in particular doesn't really have any memorable, standout martial arts sequences that will make you take notice. Another thing that kind of rubs me the wrong way is the inclusion of american songs (hip hop and rap, among other songs) that just don't make any sense whatsoever. With that said, it's still worth a Rent just to see the final Set piece and be sure to stick around through the credits to see the blooper/outtake reel which is always eye opening, especially at seeing some of his stunts going disastrously wrong. My rating reflects this American Version and not the original. A nice bonus is that Michelle Yeoh is in this one, which ironically was the first movie I ever saw her in.

Why is the Asian version superior?

Regarding voiceover, a lot of people will just never watch a sub-titled film. You will probably get a little more traffic with even a badly dubbed flick.

Superior in that it has all the scenes that were cut out for the American Version. Superior in that you get a tighter story (dialogue) as it was written. The American Versions (not just Supercop) always has dubbed lines that "fit" what the actors are saying on screen which makes what they are saying at times just.....dumb and makes no sense whatsoever. It shortchanges the story a bit. It always comes off very amateurish.
