Superman: The Movie

Trailer

Superman: The Movie had a huge impact on me as a kid. I was so pumped to see this on opening day. I even remember that day, actually it was at night, the 8pm showing at Cinema 21 and the entire place was PACKED. There was an electricity in the air that I had never felt before a movie and it was thick enough to cut with a knife. Everything I remember about that night still sends a shiver up my arm whenever I watch this on DVD. Granted, this DVD is the Special Edition/Director's Cut, even though it's not labeled as such. Although the new scenes that were put back into the film are cool to see, especially after seeing the original theatrical release a billion times. Although cool, I still prefer the original version.

The only scene that I honestly think should have stayed intact in the original is when Superman (Christopher Reeve) goes to confront Lex Luthor (Gene Hackman) for the first time and gets shot at, Flamed-On and then Frozen. No idea why it was cut, but it definitely belonged in the film. Although it was added here, this wasn't the first time I ever saw it. It was actually added to the TV broadcast the first time it aired and I tripping out trying to remember if I had looked away or something back on that special night.

As Comic Book/Superhero movies go, this one set the standard by which all are measured by. And there is one thing that a lot of movies in this genre fail to capture nowdays. It's charm. There is something about Superman: The Movie that makes me feeling like a kid again, with a goofy grin. There is that wide-eyed wonder and where the story is going to take me. The cast for this was perfect to me. Everyone had their role that they made their own.

I highly recommend this as a Buy.

Taking Flight: The Development Of Superman

Making Superman: Filming The Legend

The Magic Behind The Cape

A fascinating look behind the making of Superman: The Movie. Everyone is involved here, including Christopher Reeve. It's interesting getting their point of view on all the behind the scenes stuff that even I didn't know about. Everything here is disected in this 90 minute documentary that is broken up into 3 parts. Seeing the Test screens are pretty cool and although I knew that Lesley Ann Warren tested, I did not know that Ann Archer was also up for the role for Lois Lane. So, seeing her test was breathtaking. She would have been perfect for the role, but then that comedic angle that Margot Kidder brought to Lois would have been lost.

Probably the best part of the doc is The Magic Behind The Cape, where all the FX Shots are revealed, which make it even more amazing in that it was all done with practical shots since there was no such thing as Digital/CGI FX at the time.

Definitely check out the bonus stuff on the DVD. It's well worth your time and one of the better supplements that make the movie even richer.

Comic Book Legends Revealed #510: Superman As Musical

This would have only worked if Valerie Perrine's boobs did the actual singing.
