X-Men: Apocalypse (2016)
2 1/2 Stars out of 5

Trailer

Was not impressed with X-Men: Apocalypse at all. As a whole, it was and is quite boring and for a Superhero flick, it becomes glaring at just how boring it is. Really bad writing, especially the dialogue and shockingly, the special FX in a lot of places looked half-baked. Shoddy work. Seemed like whoever was in charge just didn't care what they were doing. The story itself was just dull. Didn't care for it. With that said, there were 3 spots in the movie that were fun and entertaining to see play out. Any scene with Peter Maximoff / Quicksilver, especially the first scene with him in full effect, is by far the most entertaining thing about the movie. Next scene, albeit short, was Wolverine / Logan being freed from his Weapon X program and going on to slaughtered everyone in sight. Going into the movie, I had no idea that Hugh Jackman would make a cameo. So, this was a nice surprise. The final scene worth checking out is of course the final showdown between all the characters going up against Apocalypse . Overkill? Yeah, definitely. But I found it cool at least. But these moments are few and far between in a 2 1/2 hour movie. Way too long. Not sure if I would recommend this to the average movie-goer. Superhero fan may enjoy some of the movie. Oliva Munn as Psylocke was a disappointment. Under utilized and underused.

I haven't seen this since it came out, really wasn't nuts about it and I really felt that the 80s wasn't exploited as much as it could have been.  The one thing I did like is that the school felt a bit more like a school than it did before (the pizza eating bulldog?  The messy rooms, the kids everywhere?  That totally worked for me).

The biggest thing about the movie is that Apocalypse as a character doesn't really work for the X-Men movie universe.  So far, they've dealt with threats that come from a human level: hate, fear, bigotry, etc.  Even the time travel from the last one was about correcting a bad decision made from emotion and pain.  So having a proper supervillain doesn't feel right.  It would have been more interesting if Apocalypse was more of a force personified, and we saw how people dealt with that.  It would have been perfect for the time it came out as well, examine the mentality of "just let it all burn down" and why that's a really bad idea.  I would have split it into two movies too, to REALLY get the most out of the 80s.  Have the first movie end with the missiles and the mansion being destroyed, and have the sequel be "the age of apocalypse" where everyone is scrambling.

One thing I want to do is... if you remember when the first pictures came out, people kept saying that Apocalypse looked like Ivan Ooze:

I wanna cut clips together and put Ivan's voice over Apocalypse (I've been working on that impression) just to see how it comes out.
