The Book of Eli

Trailer

Well, I finally got around to checking out The Book of Eli which has been on my radar for sometime. Well, since it basically came out that is. But so much time went by that other than knowing it has Denzel Washington roaming the vast wasteland in a post apocalyptic world, I didn't remember what the movie was about going into it tonight. The style and look of the film is definitely another one that pays homage to The Road Warrior. But even though Eli is set 30 years after the "Flash", it still feels very "contemporary" by comparison.

Even though I didn't remember anything from the trailer, I did remember that I was excited to see this one, more so tonight now that the DVD was finally in my hand. Well, sadly The Book Of Eli under-performed. It's not a bad movie, it's just that I kind of, unfairly that is, built it up a bit higher than I should have. I love the  post-apocalyptic world genre and tend to always get overly enthusiastic in watching them.

So, what was "wrong" with Eli? Well, namely the problem was with Gary Oldman. He usually plays great villains, but in this one he never seemed like a credible threat at all and he was almost a non-factor when you think about it and by the end, he was just lame and there wasn't any sort of pay-off to his demise. The other thing working against the movie is that even though Eli is "heading out West", it's kind of an aimless movie. With that said, the twist at the end does definitely give you a "what the f*ck" reaction that is actually pretty good. Very clever. The twist makes you immediately replay the entire movie in your head as you start to piece little things together. The set up is actually good. The idea that one man is carrying the last known copy of the Bible is rich with possibilities story-wise.

I think the movie is decent enough, but nowhere near the likes of The Road Warrior for sure. This is worth a Rent if you don't have anything else to watch. I say give it a chance just for the twist. I won't say anything about it because I figure you peeps may have skipped this one. So, give it a shot. If that's not incentive enough, it's got Mila Kunis and Jennifer Beals as well.

I thought it was OK too. My step daughter loooooooved it, primarily for the religious aspect. I find that rather humorous, because, honestly I don't think she would give a movie like this (apocalyptic/action) the light of day.

I've kinda wanted to re-watch this see if there was an BS moments, because of the twist.

That's what I meant when I said you start replaying the entire movie immediately because I too was looking for any plot holes that would have tripped it all up. I couldn't think of anything that gave it away. I would re-watch it again if I come across it channel surfing though and be mindful looking for anything out of the ordinary.

Well the one that comes to mind is when he's stand at the edge of cliff or broken highway? I forget, but a woman is being abused down below.

So I'll give the movie an OK, that he can hear what's going on and generally look in that direction, but to know there is an edge? Does he have bat like skills and radar?

I'm gonna go with the "Dare Devil" power. Since he is blind, his other sense (hearing) are more heighten, making him aware of his surroundings.

That reminds me of the old bit by Bill Cosby.

Bill is talking to a friend who likes to partake in ****. He asks why taking **** is so wonderful. His friend says "It can intensifies your personality."
Bill says, "yea, but what if you're an as shole?"

So, today I was replaying parts of the movie, looking for anything that would in fact be a misstep and couldn't think of any. Until now that is! So, you remember when they go to the house out in the middle of nowhere with the old couple? Well, there is one scene inside the house and as I remember it as best as I can, he draws attention to the old lady and says "You see her hands shaking? That's from eating too much human meat", or something to that effect.

Now this can be interpreted in a couple of ways. He 'hears' her trembling and ask Solara if she 'sees' it. Or, he actually 'sees' it himself and draws attention to it. I dunno, what do you think Mac?

I dunno. I think they are really pushing the other sensed heightened angle.

Hell, the fights alone are eye rolling.
