Dark City (1998)

Dark City - Platinum Series

Trailer

Dark City is a brilliant movie because it offers so much in the span of 90 minutes. I can't find anything wrong with this film at all. I was such a HUGE fan of the movie when it first came out and when I got my DVD copy shortly after it's release, I use to play this anywhere from 2-3 times a year. I watched this forwards and backwards and sideways. I couldn't enough of this one. But then as my DVD collection got out of control and I was buying more than I was actually watching, Dark City just.....disappeared off my radar. So, it was a real joy to finally watch this one again after years of silence. It's been so long that while watching it tonight, it felt new again and I liked that it felt that way.

The movie clearly took a page out of Metropolis in crafting it's look and design to create something totally unique and original unto itself. But enough about that. I wanna talk about how influential Dark City has become on other films. There are a handful of movies that immediately come to mind, but the most obvious decedent was The Matrix. There is no denying that The Wachowski Brothers aping both style and content for their movie and to great affect. Also, you can't watch Inception without seeing that the groundwork was established in Dark City 12 years earlier. Even with all the movies this has spawned, sometimes I think that it doesn't get enough credit. I could ask 100 random people on the street and I bet you that 90 would say they have no idea what the movie is.

As for the rest of the film, it has amazing art direction. Just....WOW. Great script and the cast was damn near perfect with Kiefer Sutherland, Rufus Sewell and Jennifer Connelly. How long has it been since I've watched this? It was long enough that I had no idea that Melissa George was in this. In the time I didn't watch the film, I watched Alias and never made the connection between the two. I wouldn't change a thing about this movie at all. I definitely need to pick up the Director's Cut DVD. It's a must. But I highly recommend Buying that one or this one. Just a great  f u c k i n g  movie.

I forgot to point out that I have considered the Dark City Trailer to be one of the greatest ever and one of my all time favorites. THIS is how you do a  f*cking  trailer that does the job of getting your ass to the theater! And the fact that there is not one word of dialogue is a testament to how striking the visuals are to sell it to you and the music that underscores it is.....perfect.

I've had thi movie since it came out. I watch it on occasion, and when my wife and I were first dating, I broke this out as one our first films to watch together.

Threre is an old, I believe Twlight Zone episode, that has a slightly similar concept. Except these things, create and destruct, physical environment you step into. They were building the now, and removed it after you went through it. In the show, one guy got out of sync and started to see this process.

Anyway, love this movie. Great ending. It's not for everyone. Kiefer Sutherland is VERY odd in this one ;)

I think Kiefer was the best thing going for the movie. Very unique character.

Very unique. He probably had a blast with it.

Watching Dark City last night and seeing his character was quite jarring because I hadn't watch the movie at all during his run on 24. So, to see this character caught me completely off guard compared to his iconic role of Jack Bauer, or even his turn on Touch. Even though Kiefer won an Emmy on 24, I still think he is underrated. He is a very solid, well rounded actor.

Yes he is. I pretty much like him in everything I've seen.

Isn't his voice change in this role kind of like Christian Bale voice in Batman? That actually kind of irritated me.

The Batman voice is purposely annoying. I really don't even get what he is going for on a "creative" level by doing that.
