The Boondock Saints

Trailer

I think that I've watched this one too many times over the years that I can no longer view this or hold this in high regards as I once did. Back when it first came out me and my friends would always talk about The Boondock Staints as if it were the greatest thing ever filmed. Nowadays, not so much. There is a certain element to the movie that still makes it unique, more so than most films out there, but it is far from perfect and it's those imperfections that knock it down a notch.

As much as I like the characters of The McManus Brothers (Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus), their "Irish" accents does end up sounding a bit hokey at times. Also, even though most people praised William Defoe's performance as the films standout, I never really liked his character all that much. I just thought he was just.... bizarre, and that manifested more so once he went drag in this. Billy Connolly and Carlo Rota on the other hand are still the best part of the movie for me.

A lot has been said about both the movie and its very controversial writer/director Troy Duffy and how much of a dick he is. There is a very fascinating documentary that deserves to be seen as it chronicles the rise and fall of someone who becomes a victim of his own ego. Basically it's a "what not to do when you become famous" cautionary tale.

The Boondock Staints is definitely worth a Rent.

Never seen it... I think.  :-\

What is it about money, power and fame that changes people? While that will never happen… having money, power or fame, I would think I would keep a level head.

Is that the same Billy Connolly that does stand up comedy? Or an actor with the similar name?

Never seen the movie or the documentary? The movie is about a couple of guys that get a "calling" from the almighty to lay waste the scum of Boston and set out to whack anyone associated with the crime syndicate. But they aren't what you would call "professional" hitmen since all their kills are more or less....lucky.

Money changes those that are easily swayed. The guy has an ego and was always a dick. He is broke and working as a bartender right now last I heard and I'm sure he is STILL a dick, even without the money.

Same Billy Connolly from Head Of The Class and Standup.

Yea, I would imagine if you’re a dick, you’ll always be a dick. You just might become a bigger one with money, power and fame.

Reminds me of the ol joke by Bill Cosby. The only time I remember him using any kind of curse word… from the movie Himself.
He was asking the question of why do people take drugs? A response was that it enhances who you are… your character.
Bill replied… “But what if you’re a dick?”

The story you described sounds cool. I’m starting to think I have watched the beginning but was so turned off by the thick accent, I couldn’t understand it and turned it off.

Subtitles and Closed Captions are your friend Mac. Use it. It helps. Without them, I'd never have known what they were saying.

I would if I could read. I had to turn Subtitles on Attack the Block. Even reading the slang, I didn't know what they were meaning. Now that is phucked up.

Quick story about subtitles. Way back when, when some p orno’s were mainstream and in local theater’s I saw one of the foreign flicks. It was in one of our art house theaters and it was pretty full. The movie starts and for like 5 minutes there is no dialog. Just watching this women walk around in her apartment. Then the phone rings. She says ‘alo and the subtitle ‘Hello’ pops up. Immediate grumbling. Then she continues to talk more... more subtitles. Suddenly some one says out loud… “Oh f uck, I don’t know how to read!” The place just **** up.

I am always going back and fixing things I posted without really doing any proof reading. Hell, I've jumped into threads that were 5,6,7 months old and found stuff that were riddled with mistakes that I had to fix, even if no one else is reading them, I'd still know and would have to do something about it.
