I wound up tossing and turning for two hours last night and came up with dialogue for my teen comedy that's the whole "hammer dropped" dramatic moment, and it actually made me cry in the moment, but I have this doubt in my mind as to whether it's really me or the ghost of TBC influencing me.  The character always had this feel of being a mix of Bender and Allison (antisocial bullsh*t artist testing people's limits, carrying a giant bag full of stuff, etc) so I don't know if my concern for that is just bleeding over into something genuinely good or if what I think is good (actually the best little chunk of something I've written in a while) will be perceived as the derivative attention-seeking pap I suspect it is.

Doesn't matter if it's "bleeding over" from the movie. When I'm struggling to find something to write, I purposely put on my favorite movies that have always gotten the juices flowing the the lead moving on paper and one of those movies happens to be TBC. It's still coming from inside you regardless of what pushed you there and that's something you can hold onto. I've written countless things after watching certain movies and I'm still proud of a lot of the things I've written over the years and wouldn't change anything at all. Consider yourself lucky you have something. A lot of people still can't come up with anything, even with help.

I guess it's just imposter syndrome rearing it's ugly head, combined with the fact I can see the parts that went into this project (Weir Science, Eight Days A Week, Breakfast Club, etc).  Plus it's not even a draft yet, so it IS just parts.  You mind if I send you that little bit?

Well, that concludes my Mini Alley Sheedy marathon, which wasn't planned at all. With WarGames last night and The Breakfast Club tonight, I feel like I need more Sheedy right now. I'm almost tempted to bust out The Dead Zone and watch her guest spot where she reunited with Anthony Michael Hall for one episode. Looking at the date of the original review, I can't believe it's been 3 years since I last watch TBC. What the f*ck! The movie just stilll kicks so much ass.

There isn't anything else I can say that I already haven't said before. But I will say this, the confession scene as a whole is just pure magic in both the written word and how it was edited together. It's a brilliant scene that allows each character to bare their souls in an organic way without it being forced. It flows like wine with peaks and valleys. I don't know how much research you guys have done on TBC, but I can tell you one thing that has stuck with me is that during the confession scene, John Hughes was sitting on the floor behind the camera. Very few people were even allowed to watch that scene live. I got that from an article I read years ago that I still have and he was in tears when the actors (Molly and Anthony) broke down. I need to bust that magazine out and read it again. It was about an 8 page article with a lot of behind the scenes stuff that I haven't scene in print since then.

One other thing, I still own the first DVD pressing for TBC and I'm still p*ssed off that the movie hasn't gotten any sort of Deluxe treatment. I was hopeful with the 2 different versions that have come after the original, only be disappointed through word of mouth that they aren't worth upgrading to. I would like a super clear print of the movie because the copy I have just looks so.....meh. I can't imagine the Blu-ray copy is going to be that much of an improvement.

That's interesting about the confession scene, I never knew that.  Or maybe I did and forgot.  I did know that the quote at the beginning was Molly Ringwald's suggestion.

I'm kicking myself for not outlining the movie last time I saw it, the whole thing is actually divided up in interesting ways, and I should have taken it apart to figure out the structure, but when I thought about it, I was too far in.

Yeah, Hughes flicks on disc kinda suck, very bare-bones and so on... like, the Ferris Bueller Blu-Ray doesn't have the commentary that the DVD has.  I will say that my Netflix HD stream was... perfectly acceptable.  Better than listening to the audio on my iPod or waiting for the show to come on cable, which are my options until it pops up again or I find a disc.

Oh, don't forget that Ally Sheedy is in Kyle XY.  She plays Kyle's real mother, which is kinda perfect casting for that character.

Um, have we talked about these yet?  The Lost Films of John Hughes.  Sh*t I gotta start writing faster, that's an insane amount of projects.  But at least I do the mixtape soundtracks.  Honestly though, I think a good deal of these ideas are probably lost for a good reason, and that's fine.

I actually have read the script for Tickets, but despite the fact that the article says John Hughes didn't like to rewrite, he would rewrite stuff every night when the movie was being made.  The script for Planes Trains and Automobiles isn't nearly as good as the flick, so I have no idea what Tickets might have been.  But I'm sure it wouldn't have been as good, even if you had Robert Downey Jr playing the lead (who it seemed like the part was written for).

Dream Sequence Deleted Scenes

Man, John Hughes' wife absolutely needs to allow them to make a proper DVD. I want the 2.5 hour long 'Director's Cut'!!!! Make it happen!!!

Where did these come from?

You know, I'm torn... part of me wants to see more, but I also know they were excised for a reason (Ferris Bueller has two young siblings that we never see, for example, because they add nothing to the movie).  Again I bring up the script for Planes Trains and Automobiles, not only was it weaker, it made Del more insufferable.  One bit of dialogue that actually went in would have totally ruined the movie for me.  It was bad enough reading it on paper, hearing John Candy say it-- no, I couldn't accept that.  I feel like The Breakfast Club might be the same thing.

Dude, I've had the same thoughts and conversations within my own head about the pros and cons of the original cut of TBC and an extended 'Director's Cut' and it all comes down to just wanting to have both copies in my personal DVD library. There are a handful of movies that I loved as is and then ended up getting an extended cut. The one that comes to mind is T2. It's great to have both, but I still find myself just alternating between the two which is something I'd end up doing with TBC. I just want to have it even if I know that no amount of new content is ever going to displace the original. As for the Screencaps, I just did a search for 'Deleted Scenes' and instead of clicking on 'Web', I went with 'Images' to see if there were any Behind the Scenes stuff and saw the 3 Images. I originally saw the Anthony Michael Hall image from a video that I will post in just a second...........

These clips are about the closest thing we are going to get to any kind of legit documentary on TBC. They are short clips, but damn fun to watch regardless.

'Lunch Money' Deleted Scene

This right here is kind of a Holy Grail moment because it's the only scene that actually had 'new' content added to an existing scene back in 2003 for broadcast TV. I want to know how the f*ck UPN got access to it to add it in the first place.

Sixteen Candles had something like this too... I think I've heard of this happening with other movies too, I think it might just be because the TV cuts need more time, so they work off a less truncated version of the film. I'm really not sure.
