The Breakfast Club (1985)

Trailer

I can't say enough good things about The Breakfast Club, other than that this movie, right now, sits at the top of my Favorite Movie Of All Time list. Where to begin with this one? First off, this is John Hughes crown jewel in a treasure chest full of diamonds. The script is hands down one of the best ever with regards to fully realized characters with so much back-story, that we already "know" all the main characters: The Brain, The Jock, The Princess, The Basket-Case and The Criminal. I would be remiss if I didn't include The Principal and The Janitor in this group as well when listing the stereotypes that they each end up owning.

The amazing thing about these characters, is that even though they are all different from one another, they all have a common bond, which leads us, the viewer, to find something we can relate to in each one. It's really hard to pick out a favorite actor / actress or performance here, because this is the definition of a true ensemble. The whole is greater than the sum of it's parts applies here.

The original cut of the movie clocked in at 2 1/2 hours long, which John Hughes has the only completed copy on VHS. The whereabouts of this copy is currently unknown, which obviously has a ton of deleted scenes. One of the deleted scenes can be found in the trailer referring to the "Allison-hugging-herself" scene. I hope that one day it will be found and released as part of a huge Special Edition DVD.

Apart from the great dialogue (i.e. monologues), characters and set pieces within TBC, the biggest thing for me here is that the movie itself made me want to become a writer of short stories, screenplays, characters, scenes and skits. And whenever I feel like my writing is becoming stagnant or just out and out writers block, I always come back to TBC for inspiration. Just because I watch this one at least 2-3 times a year doesn't mean I always have writers block either, so shut up with any wise-cracks.   I just get immense pleasure from watching this one every time.

This is a Buy for sure. Duh!!

I'm sure I will add more about my thoughts on TBC over time as they come to me. Right now, it's just the tip of the iceberg.

I completely get your perspective on getting inspiration. I firmly believe I write better today because I get myself involved in well written pieces. It rub’s off on you if you let it. It is an art form and when you immerse yourself in it, you begin to ‘get’ structure, pace, and the various other aspects of good story telling. John Hughs was exceptional of taking those thoughts and writing and encapsulating it all into a solid film.

I kind of have the itch to watch it again today. But I won't. Got other movies in the Que to watch first. I'm going to run through most of John Hughes stuff in order this week.

Kevin Smith Introduces The Cast Of The Breakfast Club

The Cast On The Red Carpet / Interviews

Special Event Highlites

This was pretty good and funny. Sucks that Emilio backed out from doing this. :::sigh::: The clips above took place yesterday (September 19, 2011). Not sure what is happening today at the Event. Will post more when the new stuff comes up. I hope that they will put up the full, unedited Q&A Session with the cast today or the next couple of days as I want to see it all.

I had such a crush on Ally Sheedy for a little while. Not necessarily for Breakfast Club, though the emerging from a cocoon into a beautiful swan scene made my heart pitter-patter... It was more for WarGames, Oxford Blues and Short Circuit.

Yeah, my crush for Ally also happened because of WarGames. I had already seen her in Bad Boys (the Sean Penn movie). But she was hardly in it to really take notice. But once WarGames came out, as in the words of The Geek, "Very hot! Very hot!"

A little off topic here but still related, if you have never seen Anthony Michael Hall's TV series The Dead Zone, there are a couple of separate episodes in which Ally Sheedy and John Kapelos guest star. The series is phenomenal and Ally's performance was a winner. Fantastic is more like it.

Where's Emilio?

On location shooting a movie in Toronto I believe. He still should have made an effort to attend the event. To this day, I don't think the entire cast has ever been seen in public together. There is always 1 person missing. Bah!!!!

FYI, I have 5 Movie Posters framed and hanging on my wall. One of those 5 is, you guessed it: The Breakfast Club. Original one-sheet. Wheeeeeee!!!  I have probably another 20 or so movie poster rolled up and packed into cardboard cylinders. If I had more wall space, I'd have all of them framed and hanging on the walls.
