The Butterfly Effect
infinifilm Edition

Trailer

The Butterfly Effect has literally been on my to-watch-list for 10 years and I finally decided to grab a copy from my Library today as it magically appeared on the shelf today. I needed to knock this one off the list once and for all. And for the first 2/3 of the film, it was kicking some serious ass and living up to what I hoped this movie would be. It was engaging my mind in a way that like I it to be as a writer. These types of alternate universe or realities are both fun to watch as well as write.  So, everything was humming along and clicking nicely. I was even able to look past some glaring holes in the plot because the story itself was king here, even if you had to seriously suspend disbelief. But the film kind of derails once Evan (Ashton Kutcher) has blown off his arms. I though that Ashton's acting was decent for the most part. Actually better than decent. But I thought how he chose to act during his wheelchair segment was really bad and it's for this reason alone that I dropped my rating from 4 to 3 1/2 stars out of 5.

This is still a headtrip (no pun intended) Thriller that will have you guessing to the very end. I will say that as a writer, I of course was trying to solve this in my mind (still no pun intended) as fast as possible and I was close. About half way through the movie, I figured that the only way he would be able to save Kayleigh (Amy Smart), Lenny (Elden Henson) and his Mother (Melora Walters) and everyone else involved in his inner circle would be to kill himself. But when he failed to drown himself in the bathtub, I became very curious how this was going to resolve itself. It's not until he literally erases himself from existence does it all work out and I gotta say that was a good way to fix the problem by being stillborn, even though the movie does end as a downer (at least for him anyway) as no one ever knows him. Don't let my rating discourage you from at least checking it out. Worth a Rent for sure and it does have Eric Stoltz, Kevin Durand, Callum Keith Rennie and Ethan Suplee who by the way has fricken' HUGE. I don't remember him ever being that BIG.

Now, were you watching the version where at the end he goes back and strangles himself with his own umbilical cord or the one that makes no sense where he's burning his notebooks?

Neither. He just became stillborn. I had two choices of which version to watch: Theatrical or Director's Cut. I went with DC.

But that's how he became stillborn, he wrapped himself in the cord as a fetus.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say they aren't very good since I never even knew about them until now
