The Cabin in the Woods

Trailer

Even though I had The Cabin in the Woods earmarked to watch this week leading into Halloween, I wasn't really looking forward to watching it. I'm not what you would could a horror fan because 99% of everything out there is just a rehash of something that was done 30 years ago. The name alone pretty much tells you what the movie is about. When you see the words 'Cabin' and 'Woods' in the title and there is a 'lake' as well, what's the one lasting image that pops into your head? Friday The 13th. So, you can see that my enthusiasm to watch another movie about stupid kids running around the woods being chased and slaughtered wasn't all that appealing.

The only reason why I gave The Cabin in the Woods a shot is because of Joss Whedon. Almost everything he has had is hands in has been entertaining one way or another. And knowing Joss, there are bound to be alumni's from past TV series making cameos here. Sure enough, we get Amy Acker and Fran Kranz. As for the story itself, the best way to describe this to someone is 'The Truman Show Goes To Hell'. I actually couldn't look at this movie as a 'Horror' flick because of the outside influence that is controlling the environment in the woods. Sure, there are plenty of Zombies roaming around in typical fashion of the genre, which Joss is basically making fun of. But the control room is what fascinated me the most because I kept trying to figure out the end game and who the 'Puppeteer' could be.

For me the best part of the movie is of course the 3rd Act where sh*t hits the fan and everything literally goes to hell in a hand basket. This is where the movie really takes off and gives the viewer something new....something different within this B-Movie "horror" flick. Everything that plays out in the 3rd Act is vintage Whedon and that's a good thing. And the ending itself is definitely one that you don't typically see in any movie.....the destruction of......Well, if you haven't seen it yet, that's all I'm gonna say. Definitely worth a Rent and one that I can easily see becoming a 'Must-watch' every year during Halloween week. Also in the cast is Chris Hemsworth, Kristen Connolly and Bradley Whitford.

Can't believe you hadn't seen this before!

I liked seeing skinny Thor but I was quite pleased to see Fran Kranz in there as the stereotypical stoner character (I tend to identify with those characters, but Kranz' in particular because he was actually thinking about what was going on).

And I totally dug the creepy atmosphere of the cabin, it had to be open enough for whatever happened so there was all this foreshadowing for stuff that didn't happen (the creepy wolf head on the wall might have been my fave, it was so freakish).

Like I said, I'm not a Horror fan and even with Whedon attached to this, it wasn't ever a priority for me to check it out. I finally decided to because it was sitting on the Library shelf and there really wasn't anything else that interested me. So, I got lucky and came away with a movie that I wasn't expecting to like much less enjoy. The Wolf's head, I was absolutely EXPECTING it to chomp down on the chick when she was french kissing it. But to do that would have tipped everyone off that the Cabin wasn't what it appeared to be. It was too soon into the movie for anything like that happen.

I'm not a huge horror fan either but I was waiting eagerly for this one.

All I was thinking when I saw her kiss that wolf was "eeewww" ... and you know me, I'm normally game for kinky stuff like that in movies.
