The Cable Guy is a very dark and disturbing movie, even with Jim Carrey in the title role. If it weren't for him, the movie would fit right at home in the horror genre, right along side movies like Single White Female. Even with Jim's hammy performance with his brand of comedy, it can't disguise itself as a funny movie because at it's root, it's just downright creepy. Trust me, there are some very funny moments throughout the movie, but it doesn't take away from the fact that you would never be associated with someone is off as The Cable Guy in real life.

When I first saw this when it came out, I absolutely hated it. I think a lot of people felt the same way as well. It was just too far removed from what I expected of Carrey at the time. I guess I wanted more of the same and this was so far out in left field that I just couldn't or wouldn't 'get' what Carrey was trying to do. Over the years, I have come to actually like and embrace the movie for what it is and how far on a limb he went in creating the character. Even though I have a better appreciation for The Cable Guy, I still can't give it a perfect score because it still freaks me out somewhat.

This is definitely worth a Rent if you want creepy and uncomfortable. The cast itself is pretty good as the entire cast (Ben Stiller who also directed The Cable Guy, Andy Dick, Janeane Garofalo, David Cross and Bob Odenkirk) from The Ben Stiller Show is in this one, not to mention Jack Black and Kyle Gass as well. Oh, and some guy named Matthew Broderick.

Mark me as one of those hating it.
