The Cell (2000)

The Cell
New Line Platinum Series

Trailer

The Cell takes the old standard plot of "getting into the mind of a serial killer" literally. By having the technology (in the movie anyway), they are able to get into the mind of a serial killer, who now lays in his own coma in a race to save the girl, his last victim before she drowns in....The Cell. I'm probably the only one on here that actually likes the movie for what it is. It's a different spin on the 'forensic' formula that uses the technology to get the clues and answers they need.

It has been years since I last watched this. It's been long enough that watching this one today actually felt like a new movie, even though there weren't any surprises left for me. The best part about the movie is of course everything that transpires within the mind of Carl (Vincent D'Onofrio). The best way to describe his mindset is like watching an Abstract painting coming to life....to devour you. I think both Jennifer Lopez and Vince Vaughn did a great job here. It's not groundbreaking, but it is definitely a unique film and all the props go to film maker Tarsem Singh, who is a visual virtuoso when it comes to creating images that stay with you long after the final image has unspooled. It's astounding in what he was able to do with his directorial debut. I first took noticed of him when I did research into finding out who directed R.E.M. "Losing My Religion" video.

Anyway, I definitely recommend this as a Buy. So, would anyone agree with me that this kind of falls into the Sci-Fi realm with the "technology" that is being used? I've always thought of this as a Horror/Sci-Fi hybrid genre.

You know what?  I've never seen this movie and I always intended to (I also think that Catherine Sutherland is the victim drowning in the cell, but I'm not sure.  Tall blonde Australian girl?)

Now you've got me wondering about the into-the-mind tech, I'm picturing the briefcase from Memento, which would be AMAZING if the same tech was used in two unrelated movies.

Catherine Sutherland is definitely in this one. You owe it to yourself to check this out. Visually, it's a stunning piece of film making that also takes the 'hunt for a serial killer' genre in a completely different route.

I love that you bolded her name.

I know, I don't know why I haven't seen this one yet.  Especially since I freakin' loved "The Fall" (but who didn't?)

I would definitely identify this as a hybrid sci-fi/horror. I was fascinated with this movie. I guess I was surprised Lopez took this project. I've seen her do sooooo many chick flicks that were 'cute', the Cell just stands out more for her trying new things.

One of the few films I stop and sit to watch if I happen across it.

I'm pretty sure it failed miserably.  And I think right after this she went into romcoms, before this she was in stuff like Anaconda, but she was also in Antz, lest we forget.
