I'm a huge fan of Disaster flicks like
Twister, Armageddon, The Poseidon Adventure, The Abyss, etc....So I expect a certain suspension of disbelief and just go along for the thrill ride that is sure to follow. So obviously I was expecting to get a payoff with
The Day After Tomorrow. Sadly, there was none. It's not that the movie is bad. Not once did I bark insults at the movie or throw my remote at the TV or even criticize the characters. It's just that the movie as a whole seemed pointless. When you really think about it, there is no sense of urgency at all. The big
Ice Age storm hits the world all at once and will last 7-10 days. All you have to do is find a secluded place, have a fire going and just wait it out. That's it.
There is no shooting missles at something, or blowing something up that will change the course of it's destruction. Just stay nice and warm, drink some brandy and make googly eyes at the chick you like. Really, the only good thing going for
TDAT are the Special FX, and even that wasn't 100% impressive for me. I do believe
Roland Emmerich was probably eating lunch with a Studio Executuve somewhere and he started talking about "what if New York was flooded over and the Statue of Liberty froze...". AWESOME! It's greenlit. I'm sure
Roland figured he would just write the movie as he shot it. I dunno.
Definitely a
Rent if you're reeeeeeeeeeeally bored and all the other movies you original went to get were already checked out.
