The Devil Wears Prada

Trailer

Well, since my Library didn't have any of the DVDs I currently have waiting in the wings, that left me with no choice but to scan the shelves and see what they had on hand. The pickings were rather slim, but one of the movies that I kinda thought I would get a kick out of was The Devil Wears Prada, and that was only because I actually enjoyed watching Ugly Betty when it was on the air. I'm not a fan of fashion and really don't get how some people live for nothing but fashion. With that out of the way, it really comes down to story, no matter what profession the movie or series it resides in and if the story is told well with engaging characters, it can make for a fun series....and in the case of Prada, a fun movie.

What's funny about watching The Devil Wears Prada is how much the term is now ingrained in the American lexicon and having never seen the movie till now, I just always assumed that it was in relation to one that was 'Evil', as in an evil boss, Miranda Priestly played by Meryl Streep. Watching the movie, she is clearly not 'evil' but she is very demanding to say the least. Not sure what the original intent of the title means, but for me, I think it has to do with Andrea (Anne Hathaway) tempted by everything that Miranda dangles in front of her. There are a series of temptations that seemingly take her further and further away from who she is, changing into something else all together, losing herself, her values and losing those close to her, friends and family.

The ending isn't even close to being a surprise at all. Once you see the set up, you will recognize the story beats immediately as it's been done countless times before in different genres. And yet, it doesn't distract from the overall enjoyment of the movie itself. It's actully way better than I thought it would be. That was the 'surprising' thing for me. I highly recommend this as a Rent for sure. Both Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway are great in this one, as are Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci. Tracie Thoms, Simon Baker and Adrian Grenier have minor roles as well. 4 1/2 Stars out of 5.

My wife is one of those folks obsessed with fashion. OK, nothing like the movie, but she loves good clothes and shoes. But damn, if she doesn't look good. She is definitely a head turner when she walks in the room... and it's mostly women making comments. Good comments.

My wife loves these kinds of movies. I didn't mind it. It was alright. I only have a sliver of thread to even relate to it. If it wasn't for her, my fashion sensibilities would be based only commercials and magazines.
