The Good Girl

Trailer

I wasn't entirely sure I would even finish The Good Girl based on the first 20 minutes or so of the movie. It looked like it was going to be somewhat of a downer film. Very depressing, especially with Jake Gyllenhaal playing the role of the loner who just so happened to be named Holden after Catcher in the Rye. Suddenly the movie became very interesting, especially with regards to Jennifer Aniston's role as Justine, who is in a dead end job in a dead marriage in a dead end town. Suddenly her life changes when she decides to have an affair with Holden. The movie still retains somewhat of a depressing feel, but there were a handful of funny situational comedy moments. They weren't meant to make you laugh, but you find yourself smiling and giggling at some of the things that transpire throughout the second half of the film.

So, I started the movie wanting to turn it off to suddenly wanting to see how it all ends. Speaking of endings, without spoiling it for anyone, you absolutely know how it will end for Justine and more specifically Holden. I ended up liking the movie, in spite of not really seeing what was so wrong with Justine's life or agreeing with her choices. Sure, her Husband, played by John C. Reilly was a bit of an immature man-child at times, but I didn't see him do anything bad that would make her want to cheat on him. And I can't entirely buy into anyone wanting to start a new life with someone as f*cked up in the head as Holden is. Anyway, I think the movie is definitely worth a Rent. And if that isn't enough for you, the bonus is Zooey Deschanel who is f*cking hilarious in this one. I didn't even know that she was in this and she turned out to be the scene stealer of the movie. She was awesome. 4 Stars out of 5.
