I'm reeeeeeeally glad that I had the will power to avoid spoilers for
The Hateful Hate and let me tell ya, it wasn't easy. As you guys know, I'm a huge fan of
Quentin Tarantino's movies and he is one of the few film makers that I actually pay money to buy his scripts in book format for research besides them being fun to read. There were a few times where I came this close to just saying 'f*ck it' and grabbing the script off the internet. But I didn't and the movie paid off way better than I hoped because I was in the dark about any and all details. On the surface, especially from the Trailer, I thought I was getting a Western, which this is. What I didn't expect to get is a Black Comedy, which this definitely is.
QT has never been one to write a straight up Black Comedy. Sure, there might be a funny bit here and there. But in
The Hateful Eight, there were plenty of moments that were truly funny, but not in a punch-line, payoff joke way. It was about dialogue and how the lines were delivered, It was how scenes were shot or just the simple facial reaction to a moment that occurs on film to drive home the fact that we are being forced to laugh in the middle of some brutal violence on screen.
I haven't yet checked online to see what other people have thought or said about the movie because I just got finished watching the flick and came straight here to get my thoughts down so as not to be persuaded or biased by other peoples point of views regarding the film. But half way through the flick, it dawned on me that
The Hateful Eight is essentially a remake of
Reservoir Dogs in a lot of ways which is the last thing I was expecting and yet I welcomed it wholly when I started making connections throughout the flick. All the
QT hallmarks are there to make this vintage
QT, from the writing, dialogue, camera shots. It's all there and more. If you are a fan of his, you will definitely dig this for sure. Definitely worth checking out. A great cast that includes
Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Walton Goggins, Demián Bichir, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, and
Bruce Dern shows that
QT really does have a knack for getting the right actors to play their respective parts. The only reason why this only gets
4 Stars from me is the excessive use of the N-Bomb. I expect a few per
QT film, but this one was just way too much.
