Just like
The Prince of Egypt, it was high time that I busted out
The Iron Giant, which by the way is my all-time favorite "Traditional" 2-D Animated film (with some computer enhancements). And just like
Egypt, this is one that I haven't watched in the same amount of time as well. Shame on me!! It's crazy how some of my favorite films can get lost in the shuffle over the years. Even though I've thought about the movie on a semi regular basis since last watching it, I just never found time to revisit this exceptional movie. If you are a fan of
E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, then you absolutely will love
The Iron Giant. It's basically the same plot, only instead of a cute alien creature, we are dealing with a 100 foot tall Robot from outer space.
What's not to love about this one? The story, as familiar as it may be, is just fricken' awesome. I love the art direction the team went with when deciding what look the film should be in. The retro look really adds to the charm of the film. The audio is phenomenal. If you've never watched this film on a proper home theater system, you are doing yourself a HUGE disservice. One of the best sounding DVD's I've ever owned in my life is
The Iron Giant. But as great as this looks and sounds, it's the voice acting that takes this to a whole other level. The movie succeeds in large part by the talent that they assembled to bring life to the characters.
Eli Marienthal as
Hogarth Hughes OWNS this movie. Love the kids voice and his acting here. But the thing that makes this such a beautiful story is the Giant's design to go along with
Vin Diesel's voice acting, giving us a very sympathetic character that we are pulling for. That's a hard thing to accomplish in an animated film let alone a live action film.
Jennifer Aniston, Harry Connick, Jr., Christopher McDonald, John Mahoney and
Cloris Leachman all did fantastic work in their respective roles.
The writing and the story is just a wonderful, ecaspist film that takes you to another place and you just get sucked into it and don't want to leave....ever. There are a lot of funny sight gags and jokes that still make me smile and laugh, no matter how many times I have seen this movie. And it also has one of the greatest and most heroic scenes ever seen in any movie, which takes place at the end when they have
Giant save
Hogarth and the town by sacrificing himself. How f*cking awesome is it when
Giant says "
Superman", closes his eyes and goes out like a champ? It STILL gives me chills. But the best part about the movie is the very end. For fear that you cats haven't seen the movie, I will not say anymore. But lets just say that when you see the ending, it will leave you with a smile on your face and most likely saying "F*ck Yeah!"
Brad Bird for the win in getting his vision of the story up on the Big Screen and having the foresight to get
Michael Kamen to do the amazing score. I highly recommend this as a
Buy. Don't Rent it, just buy the movie right now. It's a movie you will keep with you till the day you die. I'm pretty sure that I will find time to watch this one again sometime later this week. It always leaves me feeling good about things.
