I can watch procedural shows like
CSI and others because they have characters that I can watch week to week and not really focus too much on the crimes. I however really don't like watching Murder Mystery Procedural's that you find on
ID or
A&E because I find them very invasive. Plus, the quality sucks. Furthermore, the lack of production values and poor reenactments from lousy actors makes these types of shows unwatchable. I stay away from them at all cost. So, when I heard about
The Jinx and how everyone was raving this
HBO miniseries was something that had to be seen to be believed, my curiosity was piqued. All I heard was "this is must-see TV of epic proportions". That is just one of what seemed to be thousands of other proclaiming this as the greatest thing ever.
So, my expectations were at a feverish pitch of a type of genre that I'm just not a fan of at all. This is going to be a disaster. Boy, the acclaim that this has gotten is much deserved. It's not a secret to anyone that has heard just the bare minimum that this Documentary is what finally tripped up
Robert Durst, leading to his arrest after 30 years. More on that in a bit. I mentioned how the other shows are poor quality and just suck. Well, this one had a lot of thought and planning in how
Andrew Jarecki would direct, film and edit each of the 6 episodes. It literally is like watching the most epic, sweeping expensive Doc of all time. The camera moves alone tell you he isn't f*cking around in creating something different from your run of the mill Whodunit. Also, what starts out as a 'Doc' suddenly morphs into something almost like a 'Reality Show' in the vein of
The Real World because when and where have you ever seen the Suspect worm his way into a Doc and suddenly become the "Star" of it? It's never happened before.
This is why watching each episode is some of, if not the most compelling TV you will ever watch. I was literally hanging on every word from all those involved. Throw in actual surveillance footage to more or less replace the need for
Durst's reenactments and you have real stuff playing out before your very own eyes. Compelling doesn't even begin to do this justice. Over the course of the first 5 episodes, you clearly see a man that is slippery as f*ck in how he was able to stay a free man for 30 years. You also see how easy it would be to actually "like" the guy because he is so disarming. Even
Jarecki was a victim of his charms which leads us to the Final episode. With the "Smoking Gun" (actually a letter) that they have been searching for all these years,
Jarecki basically has to put aside his friendship with him in ambushing him in the hopes of proving he was guilty. What comes next will leave you speechless. I want to say more but if I do, I will deprive everyone that has intentions of seeing this of what the entire series is leading to. I absolutely 100% recommend this. Definitely must-watch TV indeed.
