When I originally saw this on opening day, I couldn't have been more pumped up to see Jackie Brown, especially since this was a long overdue return for Quentin Tarantino since his last film Pulp Fiction, 3 years earlier. When the movie was over and I left the theater, my initial reaction was of huge disappointment. I guess I was expecting Pulp Fiction II, or something along the lines of the fractured storytelling that QT had done so well with Pulp and Reservoir Dogs. It wasn't that Jackie Brown was a bad film, it just didn't really do anything for me at all and it was nothing more than an average film for me.

And that was the last I ever saw of Jackie Brown. I didn't bother with it on cable or when it hit Blockbuster. It wasn't until Tarantino announced that he was finally going to release both Pulp and Brown on DVD that I decided to give it another chance. So, naturally I bought both and since then Jackie has only gotten better with age and at one point I had it on par with Pulp. But the last couple of times I've watched it, the film has settled in the 4 Star rating and I think what I have a problem with it as I did the day I saw it, is the set up is way too long and the Switch itself wasn't complicated like I had seen other movies do it. Still, it's a good film, just not a great one. Another issue I have is that the characters themselves aren't all that engaging or compelling. The third act, or what comes directly after the switch with the 3 point of views of Jackie (Pam Grier), Louis (Robert De Niro) along with Melanie (Bridget Fonda) and Max (Robert Forster) regarding the switch itself and then the subsequent meltdown of Ordell (Sam Jackson), does it perk up.

Even though I own it, I would say it's a Rent for most people. Only die hard Tarantino fans should Buy this one.

I need to see this one.

Well I finally sat down to watch Jackie Brown. Not impressed, I guess in a Tarantino perspective. As just any movie, it was OK. Lot's and lots of talking with little if any action. I pretty much wondered what the hell De Niro's character was doing in there. Just floating in and out of scenes. WTF.

I don't see the praise thrown on it. Well written and engaging... for awhile, then it just drifts off for me. A rent, but doubt I'd watch this over again.
