The Legend of Tarzan

Trailer

Do we really need another Tarzan movie? For a Summer movie release, The Legend of Tarzan is so lackluster that I'm pretty sure that it was pushed for the Summer when it really should have been given a Fall or even a Winter release. It doesn't deliver in what I was expecting to get here. The pacing is methodically slow with not much in the way of a story either. The most interesting thing about the flick are the flashback sequences that fill in the origin of Tarzan throughout the movie. But theses are so short to really engage the viewer, which is something that should have been on the mind of the Director. There's just too much John Clayton III and not enough Tarzan to ever connect emotionally here and that there is why the movie was a fail for me.

It's an average movie and definitely one of the most underwhelming experiences I've had with a mythological character. But the most egregious misstep I came away from this movie are the Special FX. In this day and age, I expect a certain level of professionalism in the art of FX and this was nowhere near that of a basic YouTuber doing the same thing. They are eye-popping bad. Take your pick in which to study and you will see just how awful they are. Take for example the dingy boat that is rowing toward the Steamboat toward the end of the movie. It is literally floating on the water and the paddles/oars, when they make "contact" with the water just disappear behind the composite that they used to render this shot. No splash....nothing. Why they even chose to go digital is baffling. Is it really that problematic to shoot the scene practical and not on real water? Anyway, this is a Skip for sure. I'm confident that Hollywood will not make another Tarzan movie for at least 25 years because of this one.

I was amazed when I saw the trailers of just how un-fun this movie looked.

First, the blue wash?  No excuse for that.  Especially in 2016, especially after we'e had "Planet Earth."  If you're going to make a Tarzan movie now, it's gotta be the most lush, vibrant, colourful world you can imagine.  We wanna taste the dew dripping off the leaves, feel the mud beneath our toes, smell the animals... it's gotta be visceral.  Putting a blue wash and thick fog over everything completely dulls it.  What's the point of that?
