The Long Kiss Goodnight

Trailer

Long before there was a Jason Bourne, there was Samantha Caine / Charly Baltimore (Geena Davis) in The Long Kiss Goodnight. I use to rave about this movie a lot back in the day it came out and it was a guilty pleasure of mine for sure and it's still a great action flick now. But the thing about watching certain movies from the 80's and 90's is that some don't hold up well by comparison to the new stuff that we've gotten over the last few years. The writing today with shows like 24 and Alias and movies like The Bourne Identity are successful beyond the action sequences. They succeed because the writing is better, smarter and more complicated, which requires the viewer to pay close attention or you get lost and the pay off is well worth the wait.

So, watching The Long Kiss Goodnight for the first time in years for me, I couldn't help but notice how "simplistic" the plot and story was. My brain now is just hardwired for things that weave in and out of complex situations and set ups and this really has none of that. That's not the fault of Shane Black who wrote it. It's just a product of it's time and complex wasn't what was the order of the day back then. I still love the movie and give it a hearty endorsement. Definitely worth a Rent. Just don't come at this expecting some huge conspiracy type of film, or anything like the Bourne Films. You can clearly see Renny Harlin's fingerprints all over this one. I've always viewed this as the sister film to Die Hard 2. Kiss Goodnight has some whopping Set Pieces that are sure to thrill you. FYI, Samuel L. Jackson is awesome in this as well.

One last thing, this movie alone qualifies Geena Davis a spot in The Expenda-Belles.

Backyard, next to the bodies. I mean, uh. Whoops. Said too much.

Seriously, you've never heard of this? For real? Is this Ashton Kutcher?

As in Abigail Breslin? No, that's Sam Jackson. I do see people confusing the two from time to time though.

WTF... I did not see autocorrect kick in.

I meant, was this a BIG movie, like in popularity?

Very popular and still is to this day. If you like Action Flicks with a Female lead, you'll get a kick out of this one.

Harlin and Jackson have both said that this is their favorite movie of theirs. There's a rumor that a Sequel is forthcoming, but that's been said a lot over the years. I'm hopeful for one as I want to see this become a reality.
