The Martian

Trailer

The Martian is just more proof as to why I consider Ridley Scott to be the greatest director of all time. The dude just knows how to put a movie together in such a way that he can literally transport you to another time and place and in The Martian, that's exactly what he does. This movie flew by incredibly fast. Beyond the movie being thrilling to watch, it also makes you feel a little bit smarter in watching Matt Damon's character "MacGyver" his way through surviving on Mars as its sole inhabitant. I thought it was a great idea to have him talking into video cameras to log in his steps along the way. This allows him to narrate his thoughts, thus being able to get the information to the viewer. Without that little "cheat", I think the movie would have been incredibly hard for people to follow along without scratching their heads as to what he was doing or what his objective was. Science is good and I like that we got exactly that.  The plot wasn't a stretch. Beyond be stuck on Mars, you know going in that there are going to be countless problems and road blocks being put up in front of him to keep his survival in question. The fact that you know the step up very well, it's still a pleasure to watch. The 3rd Act delivered for me on an emotional level that I hoped for and got. Loved this movie. Definitely worth Buying to add to my personal DVD Library collection.

A: Nope. Didn't even know it was a book until I saw the credits.

Great book and a real quick read.  It's where that whole "journal entry" thing came from.  And he really goes into the science and explaining his thought processes for everything.

Speaking of the "Opening", I thought my DVD skipped ahead because it was scratched or something. While waiting for my DVD to arrive to me, I had it in my head that we would see them traveling to Mars. I actually thought that the crew got separated in space and he crashed landed on Mars while the others end up back on Earth. Active imagination.

Meanwhile, and somewhat related, here's an article by astrobiologist Sheyna Gifford giving us an update on her six months in sMars and what she's learned so far. I don't know if I realized that this was ACTUALLY happening since there's been scant reporting about it.  But of course, The Martian means that finally the press are taking some interest.
