The Maze Runner (2014)

The Maze Runner

I really wasn't sure what to expect with The Maze Runner. I'm kind of burned out on the teenage-kids-as-a-group-out-in-the-middle-of-nowhere-struggling-to-survive plot right now. Sure, I love The 100, but this is a movie and it's clearly tapping into the Hunger Games market since that seems to be all the rage right now. So far, all the Big Budget Hunger Game knockoffs have been predictable in plot and story telling. Do I really need to sit around for another one? Well, happy to say that I'm glad I gave this one a shot as Maze Runner, although familiar, does offer up something unique and more importantly, something mysterious. I've never read the book so I didn't know jack sh*t what was going to happen here. Normally I need to have some sort of inkling as to what is driving the story beyond just what's on the surface. This is the rare case where being kept in the dark pays off. Those are the good things about Maze Runner. The one bad thing is that this movie was clearly designed with a sequel in mind. So the ending is going to disappoint a lot of people. I had the same negative reaction as I got in Hunger Games 2 where it just....ends.  Other than that, this is definitely worth a Rent.

This is something that's been on my radar but I haven't gotten around to watching it yet.  I also don't know anything about it, but I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed it and it seems to be quality.  I don't want to suffer through another Divergent.

Not to worry, this is nowhere near Divergent. Thank God. That was a big concern of mine.

Dammit, I thought I wrote my thoughts down about Maze Runner. Well, I guess I didn’t, but I did have a good discussion with my son about it. He read the books.

I really liked Maze Runner. I thought it was not your typical tween flick the studio’s are running. There are some interesting dynamics going on with the groups and they act mature enough to make it believable in very sci-fi kind of environment. Looking forward to the follow up The Scorch Trials being release next month.
