The Nutty Professor was definitely a 'comeback' movie for
Eddie Murphy at the time and he was fantastic in all the roles he performed. But it was his role as
Sherman Klump that gave the movie its heart. His portrayal is so astounding that it's still one of my favorite performances of his. To be able to give a character sincerity and humility with flaws that everyone can related to just goes to show that when
Eddie is on, he can be a great actor. Sure, I love his other movies, especially
Beverly Hills Cop and
Trading Places. But those movies really didn't showcase his acting when all he was doing was basically playing himself with the Volume turned to 11.
As for this movie, it still makes me laugh and there are plenty of scenes to pick and choose from. I've lost count how many times I have watched this one, but the jokes still work and it's still a joy to watch
Eddie bring life to so many different characters. The Family scene alone is worth it. Funny stuff. Like
Tom Shadyac's other movies (
Liar, Liar and
Bruce ALMIGHTY), be sure to stick around for the Blooper Reel / End Credits. This stuff is priceless and will have you busting a gut......just like
Sherman. Highly recommend this as a
Rent if you're looking for some hearty laughs.
