The Shield (Season 1 - 2002)

Trailer

Even though I have watched the first season of The Shield at least 5 times since it's original premiere date (although it has been at least 6-7 years since the last time I did so), it's still just as riveting now as it was the first time around. Prior to seeing The Shield, I didn't think much of Michael Chiklis. It's not that I thought he was a bad actor. I just didn't watch more than an episode or so of The Commish. It just wasn't a show that I was interested. But when The Shield hit, it hit like an atom bomb and Chiklis was without a doubt the STAR and rightly so. As soon as he shaved his head and took on the role of Vic Mackey, he became a superstar and to watch every episode of Season 1 is to see a star only getting bigger and brighter. It's because of this show that I have followed his career since then with great interest.

As for Season 1, it's a fantastic show and at the time, very groundbreaking in it's depiction of corrupting at one particular police department in one of the worst neighborhoods in LA. Following Vic and his strike team, consisting of Shane (Walton Goggins), Lem (Kenny Johnson) and Ronnie (David Rees Snell) is to see a totally different spin on the Cop Genre for television. But it does take a while before we get to see each one with their own stories to tell to flesh out the team, although Ronnie was the least seen of the bunch throughout most of the series run. It's not until later in the shows run does he really become a character that brings a great deal to the story lines.

The Shield isn't and has never really been about the Strike Team per se. This show is littered with fascinating characters from top to bottom. If Vic and his crew isn't on the screen, you will still get immense joy in watching "Dutch" Wagenbach (Jay Karnes) and Claudette Wyms (CCH Pounder) working together and solving crimes. Their relationship is just damn fun to watch as it expands and collapses, usually within the same episode.  David Aceveda (Benito Martinez) is another character that you love to watch because as the Captain of the department, it's fun to see him straddling the moral line of what he can do to further himself polictically, while also lambasting Vic as corrupt, when he isn't any different. And the last piece of the puzzle to the series awesomeness is Danni Sofer (Catherine Dent) and Julien Lowe (Michael Jace). Always dug their story lines. But watching Season 1 was differnt because at times I would forget that I was watching a man currently arrested on suspicion of murdering his wife and then certain scenes that play out, it SMACKS you in the face when you see him explode in a fit of rage. The 'Blanket Party' scene in particular will make you think. I'm actually surprised that none of the News outlets have used that scene when talking about his arrest.

Anyway, enough of that. If you are one of the few people that have never gotten around to watching The Shield, what the f*ck are you waiting for? Get on it. Definitely a Must-Buy. F*ck renting it! This is a show that belongs in EVERYONE'S personal DVD Library. What's great while watching this season is to know that the best is yet to come. There are some MAJOR story lines coming from here on out and I can't wait to get to those. Fantastic writing from start to finish. There isn't one dud of an episode to be found in Season 1.
