The Terminal (2004)

The Terminal

Trailer

The Terminal is kind of a mash up of different genres into one. It's a Fish-Out-Of-Water flick. It's a Romance / Date movie, but the ending undermines that for sure. More on that in a bit. For the most part, this is a fantastic movie and one that I have been meaning to check out for a very long time. The only reason why I didn't rush out to see this is that the movie itself got a lot of bad reviews. Having just watched this, I honestly can't see why it didn't perform well. The tone of the film is great and reminds me a lot of Catch Me If You Can, another Tom Hanks / Steven Spielberg production. Both films are very light and breezy as Viktor Navorski (Tom Hanks) becomes a man without a country and is stuck in the airport terminal.

I don't have much experience in Airports having only flown a couple of times. But I highly doubt that anyone would be allowed to 'live and roam' a Terminal at will, even if it was pre-9/11. But whatever the case, Tom did a great job in making it believable enough to accept that people by the end would be flocking him as as superstar about to step foot on American soil. I love the way he is able to adapt to his situation and use all the resources a Terminal has to offer.

There is a big mystery as to what he is carrying in his little tin can. The reveal, which I won't spoil for you here, is actually pretty sweet and is the driving force for the entire film. Now getting back to the whole Date movie aspect. We are led to believe that this is where the movie is heading toward with Amelia (Catherine Zeta-Jones) as the object of Viktor's crush. As f*cked up as her character is, we have all expected that she will wise up and Viktor will get the girl in the end. This part of the movie I will talk about. Why? Well it kind of undermines the entire courting ritual he goes through he trying to win her heart. When the movie ends, you do feel ripped off somewhat. But everything that came before was great. Even Stanley Tucci, who is a colossal prick in this one is good in his role.

I highly recommend this a a Rent. Fun and very entertaining movie in spite of its one flaw at the end. If and when I come across The Terminal again, I know I will stop and watch it again.

You know it's actually based on a guy who lives in an airport in France, if I recall correctly.

Honestly, all I got from that review is a hankering to watch Catch Me if You Can again.  And BTW, I kind of want there to be a "Catch Me If You Can Again."

Catch Me If You Can is definitely the better movie of the two and I'd pay to see a Sequel to it as well. Getting back to what you were saying, I was actually primed to watch Catch Me while I was actually watching Terminal.

I'm on the opposite end. I found The Terminal an odd, and frankly boring movie. I do agree Hanks can bring the acting, but like a few of his other films (Larry Crowne), it's not enough to carry the story.

For me, even though this is based on a true story, I was constantly in disbelief this was happening. Plus, watching a man, basically homeless going through his day. I just could not get interested in this flick.
