The Untouchables (1987)

The Untouchables

Trailer

I'm still entrenched in the Prohibition world, courtesy of Boardwalk Empire (Season 2) and I figured that it would be a great time to bust out my copy of The Untouchables and live in that world a little bit longer. At least for another 2 hours anyway. The Untouchables is a great example of old-school film-making from master Brian De Palma. Everyone knows this movie, or least will recognize classic scenes from the film if they have never watched it in its entirety, the most famous of course being the 'Baby Carriage' scene. This is classic De Palma in his ability to build suspence from something as simple and mundane as walking up (down) steps. Some...okay, a lot of people seem to think and say that this is the film that De Palma sold out on. Sure, there may be some truth to that given the fact that this film is more about flash instead of historical accuracy as a lot is glossed over. But if the movie entertains, it's good in my book.

Moving on. Kevin Coster as Eliot Ness may be technically be the star of Untouchables, but it's Sean Connery and Robert DeNiro that steals the movie playing Malone and Al Capone respectively. DeNiro really doesn't have that much screen time in this one at all, but he does such a kick ass job as Capone that he leaves a lasting impression and you walk away from the movie thinking he is in it a lot more than he really is. Same for Connery as bad as his accent may be in this one, it was still good enough to nab an Oscar for Best Support Actor. Rounding out the cast is Andy Garcia and Charles Martin Smith. Definitely worth a Rent.

Sean Connery made this movie for me. Great gangster flick.

Chip, do you have Gangster Squad on your list?

Still never seen it.  Really should.

It's also a great example of a fantastic tv-to-movie adaptation, I understand (and boy, they "did" the Untouchables a few times on SNL 1970... guess it was a pretty popular series.  Did it ever come out on DVD?)

You referring to the TV show with Robert Stack? Although I've never seen the DVD set myself, I'm pretty sure its a safe bet that it's on the format and has been for a long while now.

And yes, you need to see the movie once and for all.

I've never seen the show available on DVD.  Old shows are tricky for some reason, I know that the old Adam West Batman isn't out anywhere, there's probably all kinds of legal issues and rights issues and film scanning issues and so on.  Although if it was all on film, we COULD get HD scans for streaming, that would be GREAT.

Okay, Untouchables: The Series IS on DVD... and the movie is streaming-- might be in HD.  So if I wasn't knee-deep in "Always Sunny," I'd watch it (I'll turn it on tomorrow, no worries).

Well, a big strength of a movie like this is the cast.  And the cast is like a baseball team.  We all like baseball, right?  Well, even with all these heavy hitters in the cast, there's no one wild card playing by his own rules!

Seriously, this movie is all kinds of awesome.  Until that awful blue-screen shot near the end.  What the hell?

Your honour, we'd like to change our review from "all kinds of awesome" to "freakin' brill."

I gotta say, I don't want to watch The Gangster Squad now.  Not that I wanted to before, but now, I don't think there's ANY chance that that movie will be better than Untouchables.  How can you beat Sean Connery or Robert DeNiro?  Who better for that stats guy than Charles Martin Smith?  Even Costner is kinda perfect in his role.

Even though the story is pretty straightforward, it still feels like there's twists and surprises and a fast pace, it doesn't feel like the movie is actually as long as it is, and prohibition Chicago looks great, and there's no CG enhancements or anything.  The fact that it's pretty much all real locales just helps sell that whole world, makes everything feel more solid than movies feel today.

Didn't take any notes, so I'm sure there's more that I'm not thinking of.

I'm still interested in The Gangster Squad, but your right, topping The Untouchables is going to be near impossible.

I'm not hearing or reading anything good about Gangster Squad.

So it's off my wait queue. If I happen upon it later on, I may pick it up.
