The Watch
Caution: Ruder, Cruder & Lewder

Trailer

I had absolutely no clue that The Watch was an Alien Invasion flick. I remember the one time I saw the Trailer when it was about to come out and I completely tuned out thinking it was going to be a lowbrow comedy, one that I would have no interest in seeing. Didn't even see the rest of the trailer beyond the first 15 seconds. Because of my initial 'impression' of what the movie would be, I wrote this off as something I would never get around to checking out. Very low on my must-see list.  The only reason why I even checked it out today from the Library was because there was absolutely nothing else to grab. So, I figured why the hell not?

As for the movie itself. Besides the Alien plot, the movie is exactly what I thought it would be. It's not bad, but it's not all that memorable either. I did however enjoy the 3rd Act that dealt with the Invasion and the Aliens themselves did look really good. I just think that the first 2/3 of the movie was typical of what you would get from Ben Stiller. The other thing that kinda undermines the movie is the casting. Would you ever expect to see Stiller, Vince Vaughn and Jonah Hill doing an Alien flick? Exactly. Even though I liked the Alien stuff, I wouldn't recommend this at all. Skip. Movie was co-written by Seth Rogen.

I'll give the movie a little credit for being smart enough to put Richard Ayoade in it (Ben Stiller helped his film "Submarine" get stateside release) although he was severely underused, in my opinion.

I knew about the alien invasion aspect of it... but they didn't really do anything interesting with it.  At least *I* don't remember that.  This movie's actually become a bit of a calling card for me in terms of stuff I hate: blatant product placement in the center of the movie (f'ing Costco, this isn't Career Opportunities, people!), lazy writing (just cast those guys and they can do their schtick) and ESPECIALLY their poor taste in music.  There's one scene in particular that keeps screaming at my mind, when they take photos with the "dead" alien and "Centerfold" keeps playing, it just struck me as the most derivative thing in the world to me.  It's what drove me to put song titles in my stripper script even though you're totally not supposed to do that.  And maybe it's a confirmation bias or something but I've noticed movie music sucking consistency since seeing this POS flick.

I did not like the Alien / Centerfold scene at all. I've seen that type of scene played out countless times in movies and tv shows that it should in fact be added to a 'Top 10 Cliche' thread. And f*ck Costco! I use to work there years ago and I wanted to blow that place up myself, so I did take some pleasure in that they did in the movie, what I wouldn't do in real life.   :P

I really hate the fact that I went on about the use of Centerfold (it's not that it's a bad song, just overused) yet I wound up referencing the song myself in a script.  So I made sure it was a cover no one had heard before (and in my defense, it needed to be a song that everyone would know because it's an impromptu group number).

From what little I remember of the movie, am I crazy or did it seem like they FORGOT the plot of the movie as they went on-- like they were so focused on doing their own thing that the alien thing was underserved.
