Thelma & Louise (1991)

Thelma & Louise
Special Edition

Trailer

Thelma & Louise is one of my all-time favorite movies and for good reason. For starters, it's directed by Ridley Scott. As I remember it, this was the movie that made me respect him as a diverse film maker of any kind of genre. It's very easy for a director to latch onto a genre and then ride it for the rest of their career. But this was someone that I could look up to that had a vision and be able to translate it onto celluloid. Just watch the movie with the volume turned all the way off and marvel at what you see. It's like a postcard of America and there are a couple of shots that really stand out for me, one of those being when they are driving through the desert at night and Ridley was able to light the background as in lighting the big rock formations. You have any idea how long that must have taken and the time crunch they were under to pull that off? That was a stroke of genius to instantly set him apart from a lot of others in my eyes.

Another reason why Thelma & Louise kicks ass is Callie Khouri's script. I've seen the movie plenty of times, but I've also read the screenplay more times than I can remember. I've dissected the script inside and out because Callie nails it. It's about the most perfect script to write in a lot of ways. The way the characters are set up with small, subtle idiosyncrasies, reversals, call-backs, rules of three. The list goes on and on. I think that the script should be required reading for any and all screenwriters. If you can write half as good as Callie, you are well on your way to being successful in the art of writing in my book.

The other reason why I love this movie is of course the cast and the characters they each portray. Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis were the perfect actresses to play the title roles. They made it their own and brought some great depth in their roles. So iconic now that I can't picture anyone but them playing their parts. Along for the ride is a great supporting cast that includes Harvey Keitel, Michael Madsen, Stephen Tobolowsky, Jason Beghe, Christopher McDonald and Brad Pitt. I wonder whatever happened to that kid? Probably flipping burgers at McDonalds somehwere today. Speaking of McDonald, he was frickin' hilarious in this one. Soooooo damn funny! What? What? WHAT? Haha.

Anyway, I highly recommend this as a Buy. Be sure to pick up the Special Edition and not the bare-bones copy. One last thing, make this a double feature by also watching True Romance, which looks and feels like they are made from the same cloth. No surprise there since True Romance is directed by Tony Scott, Ridley's brother. The cherry on top of Thelma & Louise is course the music by Hans Zimmer. Whenever I hear any part of his score, it still gets the hair on the back of my neck to stand on end. It's surreal. It's fantastic. This concludes my review.

You're in for a treat. You're about to get schooled on how to write and that's a good thing too.

Nope. That's Timothy Carhart.

I just keep thinking of the Simpsons episode.

Well, I finally got to see Thelma & Louise, pretty much based on Chips post and recommendation. Not to be contrary, but I didn’t see the stellar movie a lot of folks do. While it’s far superior to a boatload of movies, Thelma & Louise didn’t stand out much except for having women as the rebellious protagonists. It had that going for it. I thought it looked and felt dated. Maybe because of the car and the hick language?

A couple of the characters I found absurdly cartoonish. Darryl was just over the top for me. I’m sure there are plenty of people like him, but I thought Scott was trying way too hard to dot the i on that character. The pig of a truck driver, they constantly seem to cross paths with was such a buffoon.

But it’s the small things within the movie, that just jarred me out of getting involved. How did Hal, the chief investigator, find Thelma & Louise and do it so quickly. There were no witnesses; they were strangers in a strange town. Investigation only has someone that saw a green car fly out of the parking lot?

Also Hal was sympathetic towards Thelma & Louise. Why? He does not know them. Louise did kill someone. It’s as if Hal knows what went down like the audience does. He does not. All he knows is the evidence. Then things just get worse with the robbery, the cop in the desert… and he still remains sympathetic? Sure everything falls into place once they determined it was Thelma & Louise, but to me it’s that huge leap of blowing past those ghost details.

I’m still at a loss how they ran across J.D. again, in the middle of nowhere.

Then how and why did cops find J.D.?

Essentially this is a simple story thus making these gaps stick out even more, IMO.

I thought it was entertaining for the most part, but probably will not go back to it.

My post is all in spoilers for the benefit of Neumatic who hasn't seen this and shouldn't read any of this till he sees the movie.

Uh, I knew about the ending since they did it in both Wayne's World 2 and The Simpsons (if you wanna talk about buffoonish main characters).  That ending's famous, and I totally dug it (and while I liked seeing the extended ending with the BB KIng moment, I did like that it cut out before the car started sinking in the air).  I wish I hadn't known about it but what can you do?  And it's not the fault of anybody here.

This was the first Brad Pitt movie I've seen since hearing about his face blindness, I just kept thinking of Marky Bark from Arrested Development whenever he was about to pop up.  I kept expecting him to go on about these two ladies he met goin' cross country in a cool convertible, you seen 'em around? "(grumble, eye roll) ... that was US!"

You can see why he's a star, you keep wanting to look at him whenever he's on screen, kinda reminds me of his bit in True Romance.

I also LOVE that Geena Davis (she was so cute!)'s husband was Christopher McDonald, that casting ALONE tells you everything you need to know.

(Watching Friends and Susan Sarandon just popped up, my mind did an excited little backflip).

I'm so glad I watched the movie first b/c otherwise I'd also have been waiting the whole movie for Sarandon to throw a drink in someone's face.

Oh man, I loved them blowing up that truck.  That was a TOTAL Ridley Scott moment.

And about that ending, you gotta figure there's an alternate universe where they made a sequel and those two women are just kicking *SS in prison, you KNOW they would own that place in a week.

Yes.

And I also might have spoiled a little of Arrested Development for you (or not, I think Marky Bark says right off the bat that he's face blind).

Yes.

Couldn't have come up with a better double feature myself if I tried.
