Titanic is epic in every way imaginable. It's been a while since I have watched this. Honestly, I don't know why I haven't put this in the DVD player on a more regular basis, especially since I hold this film up there with the greatest of all time, even if it does have some bad dialogue in a couple of scenes. So why do I still consider it to be one of the greatest movies of all time then?
Titanic took me on such an emotional roller coaster ride from start to finish. I went through a whole range of emotion from wonderment (seeing the ship in all it's glory) to sheer joy (seeing
Jack and
Rose falling in love) to anger (seeing the crew locking the lower-class passengers behind gates to drown) to fear (seeing the boat rip apart and the passengers falling to their death in the freezing ocean) to uplifting (seeing
Rose reunited with
Jack in the afterlife...along with all the other passengers of
Titanic).
There has not been a movie before or since that has even come close to duplicating those feelings...all from one movie mind you. There are so many things I love about this movie and all the accolades of the final product definitely belongs to
James Cameron. It was shot beautifully. The music was amazing. The Special FX were astounding at the time. Still is. The editing of the movie kind of gets overlooked because it's not what you would say is a "wow" factor of the film. But think about it, if it were not for the editing, the movie itself would have seemed a lot longer than the actual 3 hour run time. To this day, it's STILL not long enough in my book.
I remember tracking the pre-production of
Titanic and the uproar over the casting of
Leonardo DiCaprio as
Jack Dawson. I too didn't think he had what it took to carry a movie of this magnitude. Boy, was I ever wrong on that. I was aware of
Kate Winslet, but I wasn't a fan of hers, only because she wasn't a household name and was still under the radar. After I saw the movie on Opening day...I immediately fell in love with her. Come to think of it, I still am.
As great as
Leo and
Kate were in
Titanic, the heart and soul of the movie was without question
Gloria Stewart. I was literally hanging on every word she would say. So when she was nominated for
Best Supporting Actress for her role, I have never been more gung-ho to see someone win an
Oscar than I was that night. To say that I was disappointed when she didn't win is an understatement.
Watching the movie again brings back fond memories for me when I saw it in the theater. I took my
Mom to see it the first week and then I took my
Grandma to see it in the second week of release. All told, I ended up seeing
Titanic 6 times in the first 2 weeks. Put that in your pipe and smoke it. I wanted to take my
Grandpa to see it but he couldn't get around very well at the time. He did eventually get to see the movie when I bought the bare bones DVD. He loved it.
I'm such in a zone with the movie right now that I'm listening to the
Titanic Soundtrack that I played relentlessly when it came out.
This is definitely a
Buy.
