Traffic

Trailer

Traffic is more relevant today than the day it came out given the fact that we are still losing the war on drugs. I thought the movie was incredibly well thought out in telling the disastrous effects of what drugs do from all sides. Everything is covered here with 3 main story-lines, all running concurrently as we see how the Cartels dominate their regions and influence and corrupt the local police, we see what happens when the drugs invade our homes and destroy families with addiction and we see how useless the American Government is in waging war against those that continue to circumvent our borders in smuggling their dope.

I can't even tell you how many times I have watched Traffic over the years. But I can say that it's just as good now as it was 13 years ago. It might have lost some of its punch since then, but the performances are still there. Talk about a star-studded cast. It's a who's who of Hollywood elite that includes Benicio del Toro, Michael Douglas, Amy Irving, Erika Christensen, Topher Grace, James Brolin, Albert Finney, Steven Bauer, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Dennis Quaid, Clifton Collins, Jr., Don Cheadle, Luis Guzmán, Miguel Ferrer, Benjamin Bratt and Salma Hayek. I particularly liked the scenes between Don and Luis. So, how many movies have they done together? Off the top of my head there is Out of Sight and Boogie Nights.

Anyway, this is definitely worth a Rent. Steven Soderbergh does a great job in weaving all the story lines into and out of the others without it ever becoming confusing. In a way, it's almost like watching a big screen version of episodic TV.
