Tron: Legacy (2010)
« on: August 22, 2011, 09:57:00 pm »

Tron: Legacy is a visual marvel and a feast for the ears. It sounds and looks incredible. And there you have it. That's all it is. Eye candy. The story was pretty damn weak and exactly what I was expecting it to be just based on the original Tron. Even with all the amazing visuals, there was one eye sore that couldn't be swept under the rug. That of course was the younger, CGI-Jeff Bridges. Everytime he was on screen as Clu, it took me completely out of the movie. Well, I won't lay it all at it's feet. The "story" was taking me out of the movie as well.

It's just a shame that this is what we get after all this time. Tron Legacy could have, should have been an amazing experience. Let down is an understatement. If you are looking for a demo disc for your surround sound system, this is definitely one to have. But if you're looking for a great story and one that you will play over and over again. This isn't it. I'd Skip it if I were you guys.

Yea, it痴 pretty much eye candy with lack of any kind of engaging story. I知 not able to see it with a good sound system, but I can imagine it would sound pretty damn impressive. I値l probably watch it whenever it comes on, but I知 not one to buy this.

It sounds AMAZING! And on top of that you get Daft Punk scoring the film, which was really the one thing that locked me into the moment during the chase and fight scenes. I'm just flabbergasted that with the music, special FX (minus Clu) and sound FX as part of the pie, that they forgot to write a good story to go along with it.

I don't see how you would find the story not appealing?  You have Sam Flynn, the son of Kevin Flynn, wondering aimlessly after his father disappeared when he was a child.  When he is sent into the The Grid, he discovers that his father has been held hostage by Clu, his dad's creation meant to improve The Grid.  Sadly, when a new life form is found in The Grid, Clu's interpretation of what improvement is different than Flynn's, leading to the rebellion that occurs.  Sam is faced with helping to save the last of the new life form, saving his father, stopping Clu's attempt to fix humanity, and returning back to reality.  True, there are gaps in the story, but nothing that would warrant a "skip."  I would recommend a buy on the technical merit of the disc, and the story would at least get a rent from me, if not a buy.  I thought the movie was entertaining, and exciting.

Just like I did with Sucker Punch, I decided to revisit Tron Legacy (4 years after my initial viewing) in the hopes that time would have made this a better movie-going experience for me. Nope. The movie is still without an invigorating story. I was even more bored the second time around than I was the first time I saw this. The pacing is just so damn slow. I usually complain if a movie is nothing but Set-Pieces. But given how yawn-inducing the exposition is and how many times they talk about the same thing throughout the movie, more chases and/or explosions would have been a welcome addition. Still an amazing visual and auditory treat for those that have a sweet system to demo this on, but this is still a Skip from me. I know I will never watch this again. Still a 2 Star movie for me.

You brought up Sucker Punch, I was actually gonna ask if you were gonna play with this flick as well, or borrow parts from it (put Olivia Wilde in he asylum, or have the girls race lightcycles or whatever).

I was thinking about it. I like the world and it's rich for something to do in it. What that is, I don't have any ideas yet.

Literally after posting the last post, an idea came to me that is making me very excited to flesh it out. Let me hash something out and I'll run it pass you when I'm done and get your take on it. Sh*t, it might actually be what Tron 3 is going to be. Ack!

I played around with it a bit in the day... the one thing I remember was I made Quorra a little more geeky and had her drop computer-isms (like she offers her hand for a handshake, when whats-his-name doesn't respond, she asks "Accept/Deny?"  And says "Okay" like a kid saying a dirty word, since it's always the user who clicks that button, that kind of thing).

I also had whats-his-name attach his laptop to the old computer with a MacGuyvered cable, so Clu and he at the end fight their way through a wormhole and arrive at a "MegaTron" style universe... what current computers look like, Ghost In The Shell style, with a Wifi beam bright as the sun.

So, did you ever write down what your idea was?

No worries.  I was reminded of this because I found out that Garret Hedlund is in that upcoming Peter Pan flick, and I remember my sister working with him, he came back to shoot reshoots for Country Strong after doing Tron and he looked totally different, and he was so strong he just yanked Em up and gave her a big hug.  Very sweet.

Just came across this bit of art online, I added it into my parts scriv but I thought that you might like it too, Chip

it's by an artist named Mike Winkelmann who's done a drawing every day since 2007.  But these sort of felt "Tron-y" and I thought maybe they'll inspire something for your Tron de-write.

Thanks.  Added one at the end.  I didn't want to say what I saw b/c I didn't want to colour your impressions.  Glad you like, and hope they inspire something.
