Tropic Thunder: 2 Disc Director's Cut

Trailer

Watching Tropic Thunder, I had no f ucking clue how I was going to rate or even review this movie. If you are familiar with Ben Stiller's comedy bits and his movies in general, you have a good idea of what you're in for. But even for me, this was beyond surrealist comedy. It opens up with classic Ben Stiller sight gags and was so over the top that you can't look away. Funny, but way out there. So much so that it became laughably bad. But then a strange thing happened, the more I watched the movie the worst it got, which actually translate into better. Lets be real, the movie is bad. So bad that it becomes awesome. It's now into campy guilty pleasure realm for me.

There are so many funny sight gags and the topper was of course Robert Downey Jr. and Tom Cruise. They both knocked it out of the park. And I gotta give it up for Ben for making this. Amid all this chaos, they manage to squeeze out a pretty touching scene at the end between him and Robert.

Yes, this one is a definite Rent for sure, but dare I say it's a Buy? Hmmmmm. Maybe later. Rent it is.

Les Grossman (Tom Cruise) and J-Lo Dance-Off (MTV Movie Awards 2010)

I remember watching this live and laughing the whole time. Pretty entertaining and he lives up to the name Les Grossman.

Hearing that Neumatic is watching this one is making me want to check out Tropic Thunder again, especially after reading my own review. Ack!

What kind of bonus features are on the second disc?  I do remember, and have somewhere, that little bit they did for MTV with Stiller and RDJ (in the Iron Man mask) beating the crap out of Jack Black).  On the one-disc, which I have, it's just two commentaries (though RDJ brilliantly does his as Lincoln Osiris... you know that's something they couldn't get away with in Cloud Atlas because that movie cuts around too fast).

I had totally forgotten about that awesome kid who runs the heroin camp, he's so angry and nuts... and just one of the most unexpected bad guys I can remember.  And you feel a little sympathy for him because he's a kid but not too much because he's f'ing pyschotic).  It's one of those weird but brilliant casting moves that the movie makes that you don't see coming but makes the movie so much better (Tom Cruise is another example, I remember when that came out and people were trying to figure out who he was for that first minute when he was on screen).

I had also forgotten about Matthew Mac as Stiller's agent and Jason Bateman's cameo at the end

I can't remember specifics of what was on the 2nd disc, but there were plenty of extras. That much I can tell ya.

I think the "Heart of Darkness" parody is on the second disc, but I remember not digging that too much.  I used to be all for special extra bits, but now I've become the "everything important to the movie should BE in the movie" guy.  I don't get why, for example, the new Superman movie needs a prequel comic.  Especially since, you know, it's a freaking origin story.

I think it also shows how much I've grown that watching it again was the first time I got the beads joke in the Satan's Alley trailer.
