Finally got my copy of
Zero Dark Thirty from the
Library today. Took them long enough. It felt like the wait time for this to arrive far exceeded the actual manhunt for Bin Laden. So, was this any good? Absolutely. Is it as great as it has been made out to be by population at large? I'm not sure. I think because I went into this one with high expectations, based on what everyone has been raving about made it a film that couldn't possibly meet such lofty praise. But overall, I definitely think this is Grade-A stuff. I think the movie will definitely play better to those that actually enjoy military ops and or thrillers that
Zero Dark Thirty is firmly rooted in. This is almost perfect, but not quite.
The one thing I applaud
Kathryn Bigelow for is not showing
Bid Laden anywhere in the movie until the very end. I think it would have been a bad call if they had shown him throughout the movie, crosscutting between him and
Jessica Chastain's character as she pursues him to the ends of the Earth. It would have undermined the film as a whole for me. I think it was imperative to reflect just how elusive
Bin Laden was and why it was so damn hard to pin point his location with countless dead ends and false leads. Had they been crosscutting, the 3rd Act just wouldn't have been as powerful as it was. And let me tell you, the 3rd Act alone is worth the price of admission. This is the closest thing we are ever going to get to the real thing. Speaking of "real things", I know all about the controversy surrounding the film and how "far from accurate" the press has made this out to be. Whether it is or isn't doesn't take away from the fact that this is a movie to definitely check out. Worth a
Rent for sure.
This has been an interesting couple of days and totally unplanned. The last few episodes of
Rescue Me (currently my DVD marathon) has really gotten into
9/11 and
Ground Zero a bit more than usual for the series. It was and is very interesting to see the tail end of the story with the assassination of
UBL. And lets not forget that I had just finished watching
Season 2 of
Homeland a couple of days ago, which itself has a lot of ties to 9/11. It all fit together like a jigsaw puzzle.
