Up in the Air (2009)
« on: June 18, 2012, 11:42:40 pm »

Up in the Air is a good movie, just not the great movie that everyone seems to bill it as. I think that it loses steam by the end and the ending itself just left me feeling cheated in a way. But I'll get to that in a second. Let's start at the beginning shall we? The setup was in a word...perfect. I was hooked and ready to take flight with Ryan Bingham (George Clooney) and follow him on his travels as he flies around the US....firing people from their jobs. The way it was setup, I had started to figure out what would transpire. In my head I thought the hook would be that he gets fired himself and just flies around or he would start running into people that he had fired in the past and that's where the comedy would come from.

Neither happened. It was a different movie altogether and it was just as entertaining and kept me in the game. But everything was all roses when it came to his fling that suddenly turns into something "real" for 3/4th of the movie. But something was nagging at me. Where was the conflict? There wasn't any. And then I figured it out that Alex (Vera Farmiga) was married with children. Sure enough, she was. But then.....nothing.

This is where I think it kinda flat lined, Yes, I get that the whole point was for Ryan to take a chance on someone, even if he ended up getting hurt. At least he would be living now rather than just moving from Hotel to Hotel. But even with this leap of faith that he took, there really wasn't a payoff at the end for me. Like I said, it's a good movie and I do recommend it as a Rental. Clooney does own the role and is reason enough to check it out. But there is also Farmiga, Anna Kendrick and Jason Bateman to further get you to watch it.

I enjoyed this flick quite a bit. All the characters were interesting. I really enjoyed Natalie Keneer. I did not know where the story was going... Really. Just a fun flick.
