War Horse

Trailer

War Horse turned out better than I thought it would. I wasn't all that confident that the movie could or would elevate itself after the first half hour or so. Watching Albie (Jeremy Irvine) bond with his horse Joey seemed a little too contrived. And then once the horse was sold to the Army to join the war, Joey basically becomes a conduit to tell story of each person who somehow crosses paths with the him. Although interesting in itself, it was kind of hard to 'connect' to their stories because it ends too fast before it's onto the next "owner".

The movie really kicks into high great once Joey is on the battlefield, one way or another. He fights along side the Germans as well as the British. There were some incredible, amazing filmed shots that were truly breathtaking to see. There was one scene in particular that stood out heads and shoulders above the rest and that was when Joey, running for his life through the battlefield was racing headlong into rows and rows of barbwire, which made me wince at the pain the horse was in. Brutal doesn't even begin to describe it. But out of this crisis arose the coolest moment of levity in the movie when one soldier from the British side and one soldier from the German side called a temporary 'white flag' truce so that they could help out Joey. I really liked the idea that two sworn enemies put aside their differences to work together for a common goal.

Like I said, the movie didn't start off like I wanted, but it definitely delivered by the end. I highly recommend this as a Rent. Think along the lines of The Black Stallion meets Saving Private Ryan. Also, it's got Steven Spielberg going for it, so you know what kind of movie you're getting. Also going for it is Emily Watson.
