Warcraft: The Beginning

Trailer

I've known about Warcraft for years and I've never been compelled to play the game once, which I haven't. So I'm coming into this movie with zero knowledge of the mythology and the characters, which in turn made me have very low expectations for what would be the final film product. My initial perception almost came to fruition as I contemplated quitting the movie a couple of times within the first 30 minutes, which was insanely slow and laborious to get through. After that, everything started to pick up steam. Things were moving at break neck pace at times. This was good visually to get me glued to the screen, but it came at the expense of character development. Do I honestly think going into a movie like this is going to have that? No. But I do expect there to be some effort on the writers part to make us want to connect with any of the main characters. Ironically enough, the one character that everyone will connect to is that of  Durotan, a complete CGI character.

It's the human characters that were rail thin and hampers what is actually are pretty decent flick. There were far too many scenes that just felt rushed and I don't know if it was the lazy writing or if it was in fact due to scenes being cut or thrown away entirely to make its run time at 2 hours. As I said, the movie is better than what I thought it would be and it could have easily hit the 4 Star mark if for a few changes. It's a spectacle and a feast for the eyes and it looks damn good in the process. You can't help but marvel at the Orc scenes in particular. This is clearly a franchise in the making so they set up the sequel at the end. This may have only garnered 3 1/2 Stars from me, but I'm actually hoping and looking forward to the next installment. As for this one, definitely worth a Rent. FYI, I was pleasantly surprised to see both Dominic Cooper and Ruth Negga as the King and Queen. For fans of Preacher, you will know they are far from a King or Queen on that show which made seeing their pairing all the more better.
