I love my football movies and surprisingly, I had never seen
We Are Marshall up till now. I've been putting off watching this for the last 4-5 years for whatever reason. As far as football movies go, this one will never contend with the likes of
Rudy or
Invincible. That's not to say that
We Are Marshall is a bad movie. It's a decent flick that retells the tragic plane crash that took the lives of the entire team as well as family, friends and boosters on board. The movie is about how a town must rebuild not only itself, but fielding a new team to take its place. After the plane crash, which happens earlier in the movie, it becomes somewhat of a 'paint-by-numbers' formula of typical beats found in the genre.
Like I said, it was decent and did its job, but there was something nagging at me that I just couldn't quite put my finger on. And then the end credits began to roll and I immediately knew why something just wasn't gelling with me. The film was directed by
McG. Yup, not the first choice I or anyone would have to direct a historical movie. He wasn't horrible, but there were deficiencies in how the movie was put together that lessened the film in my eyes. I still think it's worth a
Rent, just to check out the cast that includes
Matthew McConaughey , Matthew Fox, January Jones, David Strathairn, Kate Mara, Kimberly Williams and
Ian McShane.
