Any Given Sunday
Special Edition Director's Cut

Trailer

I was 100% certain that I had seen Any Given Sunday once before. Apparently I haven't. I think because I have seen the Trailer a few times over the years, I just got it in my head that I had. Anyway, you would think that a movie about football would be a slam dunk for me given how obsessive I can be about the sport and the San Diego Chargers. The action on the field is definitely the most in-you-face-smash-mouth-football scenes I have ever seen in a film. But I do need more than that if I'm going to watch this again. It's not likely I will ever do that.

I just didn't care for any of the characters. Every last one of them are dicks, one way or another. Maybe that was the point of the movie. Football may be a team sport, but the team is usually stacked with selfish players, always worried about padding their stats to get their bonuses or endorsement deals or a way to leverage a bigger payday with another team. Jamie Foxx is the biggest dick of them all who plays the 3rd string QB that gets a shot when the star QB played by Dennis Quaid goes down with an injury. But the players aren't the only dicks in this movie. The head coach played by Al Pacino is one. The team owner played by Cameron Diaz is another dick. Even the team doctor played by James Woods is a dick. Hell, his last name pretty much says he is.

Sounds like I'm knocking the movie. I'm not. Just pointing out something that I don't know was intentional or not by the hands of Oliver Stone. FYI, this has a lot of his touches throughout the movie with the MTV style editing and random, abstract images he has always been known to inject into monologue scenes, particularly the one involving Foxx and Pacino. Any Given Sunday is worth a Rent but nothing more. I did expect more from a movie from Stone about Football though.

The stacked cast also includes: LL Cool J, Lawrence Taylor, Jim Brown, Aaron Eckhart, Matthew Modine, John C. McGinley, Lauren Holly, Ann-Margret, Charlton Heston and Elizabeth Berkley who plays a call girl. More nekkid typecasting for her. Hey, I'm not objecting to seeing her without clothes. Small cameo role, but one that you will definitely remember.

I don't think I've seen it. At least I'm not recalling anything.
