Weird Science is your typical 80's Teen Sex Comedy that was usually populated by the likes of
Corey Haim and
Corey Feldman. What elevates this one was the awesome cast of
Anthony Micahel Hall, Ilan Mitchell-Smith, Kelly LeBrock, Robert Downey Jr. and
Bill Paxton. Along with the cast,
John Hughes was able to give the genre a nice spin by turning the Frankenstien mytho's on it's ear and giving us
Lisa as portrayed by
LeBrock. Man alive, did I have a MAJOR crush on her when this movie came out. This is definitely the most Unlike-
John Hughes script ever as it dealt mainly with Fantasy, which he never touched upon again.
One thing that blew me away tonight was after all these years and as many times I have watched this movie, I just NOW noticed that
Wallace Langham (The Larry Sanders Show, CSI: Vegas) had a blink-and-you'll-miss part, which in fact his film debut. I never ever noticed him before. Most likely because he was sharing screen time with
LeBrock that I never bothered to take my eyes off her and see who she was sitting next to. Also, for those with a good eye, you will see
Darren Harris (
Cliff from
Sixteen Candles, i.e. the other "nerd" that hung out with
John Cusack) as one of the
Weenies at the Shopping Mall.
John Kapelos returns for his third straight
John Hughes movie right along with
Hall.
Unlike a lot of those horrible teen comedies from the 80's, this one still holds up extremely well. Yes, you guess right. This is a
Buy for sure.
If you're still not convinced in giving this movie a look-see,
Hall's version of a Pimp is about the funniest impression of a pimp you will EVER see in all of cinema. This just goes to show you another example of his impeccable timing when delivering comic gems.
