Casablanca - 3-1/2 stars
I thought we might have developed a thread about movies we have not seen. I’m referring to meaningful movies. Missing Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo is not what I mean.
Anyway, I finally got to see Casablanca. Not that I was ever thinking I was missing something, but since the opportunity arose, I took it.
I think I understand the love for it, while I found it to be just a pulpy love story. I almost couldn’t get past the age difference of the stars Bogart @ 43, Bergman @ 27. Almost. Anyway, it was a somewhat engaging film. I learned 95% of the movie location is Rick’s Café. The interaction among the Nazi’s, Italian police and French Police was as open as it appeared.
I guess the real point of the movie is the incredible love between to the two characters. The story slowly builds to reveal what existed between the two and made it that much more gut wrenching to know or think you know, that this love will never come together to stay.
I doubt I’ll watch it again. I felt kind of spoon feed the story. In one part of the scene, they tell you what is going to happen, then a scene or to later, it happens. That happened quit a bit. Also the smoking. Good gawd, I guess cigarettes were implanted in peoples mouths back then. Finally I was a little surprised at the repetition of Bogart’s phrase “Here’s looking at you Kid”. First was cool, 2nd was I heard that before, 3rd was what’s going on. The 4th, I just wanted to punch Bogart in the throat.
I don't mean to crap on the film... I just didn't think it was all that.
