Lucky bastards.  We mostly get the ones most people don't want.

Holy crap, what kind of library system is that? I don't want to sound like I'm crapping on it, but that kind of business plan seeeee-ucks.

You going to the Salvation Army Library?

Personally, I was first surprised that we were even carrying DVD's to begin with, but even MORE surprised that out Library actually orders new DVD's weekly and enough copies to cover all the branches. So, for the big release titles, they order about 20-25 copies. It's crazy, but locally we went from 2 Blockbusters within walking distance as well as a Mom and Pop video store. All 3 no longer exist as of last year.

Public Library.  This is a red state.  And one that doesn't really care about the libraries (they're not even open on Fridays).  And I'm not talking just about my local branch, it was mostly garbage at the big downtown library as well.

I miss Blockbuster.  Especially because I could get movies the weekend before they came out for nothin' so we were always slightly ahead of the curve (I worked there).

Prior to Blockbuster finally closing, I hadn't rented from them in probably 15 years. Most over-inflated retail store I had the misfortune of dealing with and this was when it was "cheap". When I last rented a movie there, it was 6 bucks for 3 days, 10 bucks for video games. Over the years, the prices got even higher with more restrictions. The last times I stepped foot in BB was maybe a month before they finally closed their doors and I couldn't believe the rental prices they had for movies. $12 for one day rental for movies. $15 for games. They priced themselves out of business. Now, this was just at my 2 local stores that I did this. I don't know if this was across the country and maybe it was based on local clientele that they could raise prices so high with the amount of expendable cash and foot traffic. But still......

I loved the Mom and Pop shops we use to have. The same movie for $1.50 for a week. Sure, they had smaller quantities of the big releases, but I didn't care at those prices.

Holy cow, that's WAY more expensive than what my store charged (of course, being an employee I didn't have to pay crap.  I DID keep my grandfathered-in multipass, flat rate per month, I could have three out at a time with no late fees.  They were fools for letting that offer expire).  I think, were you guys part of the "no late fees" thing?  We didn't have that here (we were franchises but we spent YEARS explaining that to our customers), but what the stores that cut the fees did was transfer the late fee cost into other things ("restocking" fees and so on).

I heard Hot Coffee was pretty good and I was already interested so I decided to see it.  WOW.  VERY good, though it's one of those movies that just makes you lose all hope for civilization (to be fair, how many documentaries have happy endings?).  If you haven't seen it, for the love of all that is good and holy and just in the world when they start talking about the burns look away because they'll show you the pictures and you do NOT want to see them.  I don't know if you've ever seen a picture of, say, a distended rectum, but it felt WAY worse.

I really need to find something really positive to watch now.

That's easy! I'd go with this.

Oh, I forgot that before I saw iSteve, which was written in three days and shot in five and you know what... it shows.  It wasn't great but there were definitely some chuckles (Jorge Garcia playing Steve Wozniak of course), I don't want to spoil it (it's really short) but the sex scene made me cackle so hard.  Given the time period it takes place in, it makes so much sense in a "this doesn't name any sense" type of way.

Maybe I'll watch Get Shorty or some Monty Python or something.

After that awesome 90s concert I decided to dig out Clerks which I haven't seen in YEARS (and which Blu-Ray I hadn't **** into at all) and dug.  It's been... I don't want to say the perfect amount of time, but it took forever for me to start because I got sucked into all the special features.

Now, Clerks II... which I'll bet has been four years since I've seen last.  Kinda too close for comfort at the moment, though.

Well, "Smashed" was quite good, although... I dunno, I'd been waiting to see it for a while so I thought there was going to be some more intensity crammed into it, you know?  Which, I know it's REALLY something to say that a movie where Mary Elizabeth Winstead pees on the floor didn't go far enough but I guess I was just anticipating much messier stuff, venom spitting back and forth and scorched earth sh*t.

But I still liked it.  I get why everyone else liked it.

Dunno if I'll watch it again though.

Followed that up with "Coyote Ugly" which is so strange insofar is it seems to glorify drinking.  I put plenty of my thoughts (though only a fraction of all the notes i took).  It was research otherwise I think I would have turned it off any number of times.

Watching Mallrats now, another flick I haven't seen in a number of years.  I remember having this movie an audio cassette when I was younger, works great with just the soundtrack.  And watching it, I realize since the mall is an 80s design and the simple style that Smith/Klein shot it in, it sort of has a little John Hughes look to it.  Nowhere near that quality, of course, but...

Pain & Gain

A different kind of film from Michael Bay. I, myself, have no feeling good or bad about the man. So I was pretty open to sitting down and watching this. I just don't get the appeal. Pain & Gain leans into black comedy and quite frankly, I'm not a fan... I get it... but I don't get the appeal. What I did like is I had no idea what was to happen next. A priority in my film watching.

I almost turned this off. It just wasn't grabbing me. The characters were incredibly stupid... and this is supposed to be based on true events? Anyway, it was definitely an odd flick. I would say Dwayne Johnson did the most stretching here of his character. I've never seen him like this. It was refreshing in a way.

Despite almost turning this off and being black comedy, I would say it was entertaining. I don't feel I wasted my time... BUT, I'll probably never watch it again.

El Gringo

Yet another odd film. I just happened across this channel surfing looking for something I haven't seen. Kind of a mix of El Mariachi. Machete and some of the old spaghetti westerns. This had a definite feel to it. Good or bad... I dunno. They really played around with editing and camera shots.

The acting was horrendous, but I just took that as prime unintentional B-movie. The story is nothing new. The execution is. I halfway recommend this.

Howard the Duck

and yet another bizarre freaking movie. I haven't watched since it came out on .... VHS.

I've been working my ass off downstairs laying tile all this weekend. I'm beat and I was just flipping through channels. I landed here and was too lazy to change it. Honestly this is one dumb ******* movie. Lea Thompson looks cute and great, but beyond that an idea that just executed badly.

I do have a guilty pleasure though of the theme song. I really like it. I believe Thomas Dolby wrote it. Tongue firmly in cheek concludes the movie.
I actually had the 45 when I collecting records.
