[REC] 3; Genesis [REC] 3 Genesis is the unimaginative name of the obvious sequel to the Spanish horror franchise REC. The original REC had some very fresh ideas. While it did feel like many video games with the dimly lit and claustrophobic hallways and rooms, the raw footage with no named people really amped up the horror and scare points. The first sequel, which is overlaps the first movie by minutes, takes the adventure in a completely different arena with an airplane and airport.
[REC] 3 Genesis just completely jumps the rails in many respects. The director apparently said, let’s try humor. It worked for Shaun of the Dead.
Hey, let’s also through some religion into the mix. See, the people who just turned into zombies are really Satan’s children. That’s right. That’s not Uncle Floyd having a bad day. That’s really Beelzebub in Uncle’s skin. Hear me out. It makes sense doesn’t it?
Not...
… the gore and blood still fill the screen, but so does the nonsense. I’m pretty sure the core idea was to take this petite woman on her wedding day and turn her into a chain saw warrior. In her wedding dress of course. Start filming now and we’ll build a story around it.
The only good part is they thankfully dropped the found footage angle. It started off that way and was quite stomach churning, but ended once the zombie’s broke out.
It’s not horrible, it just doesn’t fit in with the previous two. And you could walk away for a bit, come back and still know what happened.
