Magic Mike

I give Magic Mike two stars... generously. Not sure it even deserves that. And not for the reason a lot of guys might think. I did not watch this as if geared for women only and shun my eyes because of male strippers.  This movie is for both genders.

The problem is it's got no story. I mean this was one boring, one dimensional story. Guy strips, has other jobs, finds a young guy to join, has a little bit of dialogue with new friends sister.

That's it at best. The dancing which all happened in one place started to bore me real quick. I have zero interest in what male strippers lives are like. It's rather mundane. It reminded me of Cocktail. Really, you're going to build a story around a bartender? Same thing in Magic Mike.

Matthew McConaughey is on the verge of doing his same arrogant, loud character over and over. Channing Tatum was decent in his role. All the other male strippers were just one dimensional and I didn't care about any of 'em.

I don't care if this movie is directed by Steven Soderbergh. That means little to me except I know he can do good work. This wasn't one of them.

Cody Horn is definitely easy on the eyes and has a little bit of Jessica Beal going on.

Oh and you do get to Oliva's Munn's mommy parts. Didn't know it until the camera came close up to her face. Her acting is OK.

Had you given this 5 stars, I still have no desire to watch this. Swap out the actors with Playboy Bunnies and I'm singing a different tune.

Just finished "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter."  I knew that Timur Bekmembatov (hereinafter "Becky" as Morgan Freeman calls him) was involved but I didn't realize he directed it, but DAMN it's a real step down style-wise from Wanted, which is so funny because I'm sure that the budget was higher than Wanted had.  And the style of it felt VERY tv-movie as well.  I'm a little heartbroken, to be honest.

It's not fair to compare this Lincoln to the "proper" Daniel Day-Lewis portrayal (which I admit I haven't seen) but there's something "Abe" that's missing, probably because he's playing Abe as a character and not "Abe," if that makes sense.  And while I love Mary Elizabeth Winstead, I kept thinking she made an odd-choice of portraying depressive Mary Todd Lincoln as SMILING all the time, but then there's the time jump.  She didn't really get to be crazy, though.

I feel like the movie should have played more with the biopic conventions, in the same way that Walk Hard did.  I wonder if part of that is Timur's extent of film-knowledge and genre-saaviness... perhaps there needed to be more adaptation-ness done to the script, to suit the story for screens.  Because apparently the book is quite good, but between this and Dark Shadows might point out a weakness for the medium that Seth Graeme-Smith has... and I only say this because being able to overcome an issue like that is being aware of it, and I HOPE he gets better with the film adaptations because the dude has some crazy ideas.

So, is Vampire Hunter a Skip then? I don't think Mac gave it a good review IIRC.

I don't know, I liked it enough to not skip it but didn't like it enough to recommend (although Alan Tudyk popping in made me giggle).

Lawless

I didn’t hear much about Lawless when it hit the theaters. I was mildly interested. Period films have such a specific appeal for me. Either I’m absorbed like the 1920’s of Lawless or typically they put me off. Lawless did a fantastic job of painting the time period with sets, costumes, style, etc. Unfortunately the story I’ve seen untold times before. The movie really never grabs you. Sure, there is conflict of a corrupt mob leaders coming into the backwoods during prohibition and it becomes a war of city vs. country folk, but it’s been done before. I couldn’t get vested in anybody. Tom Hardy was good as Forrest, a quiet ghost like leader. Guy Pearce was the over the top bad guy. Shia LeBeouf I was a little surprised that he had a rather wimpy character. I expected that transformation of fully taking over like Michel in the Corleone family of the Godfather. But to little too late. The rest… phtttt.

While there were a couple of brutal bloody scenes, it was not that bloody. Not a bad film and I guess intended for a new generation of film goers, because the older generation has seen this movie many times over.

A rent for a buck is decent.
